After an encouraging freshman season in 2011-12, he attended Louisiana Lafayette where he scored 15.9 points, 5.6 rebounds, 5.5 assists, and 2.4 steals per game. Elfrid Payton was titled First Team All-Sun Belt Conference.

As a junior in 2013–14, Payton emerged as one of the top defensive players in college basketball. He raised his averages to 19.2 points, 5.9 assists, 6.0 rebounds and 2.3 steals per game and led the Ragin’ Cajuns to the 2014 NCAA Tournament. In April 2014, Payton declared for the NBA draft, forgoing his final year of college eligibility.

Elfrid Payton was selected with the 10th overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft by the Philadelphia 76ers in June 2014. He was subsequently traded to Orlando Magic on draft night for Dario Saric. 

Payton was named the Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month and a Rising Stars Challenge Participant. He became the first Magic player to score a consecutive triple-double. He became the first NBA rookie to do it so since Antoine Walker in 1997.


Elfrid Payton was traded to the Phoenix Suns for a 2018 second-round pick in February 2018. He made his debut for the Phoenix Suns averaging 19 points, nine assists, and six rebounds against Denver Nuggets.

Payton signed with the New Orleans Pelicans in July 2018. In October 2018, on his debut game with New Orleans Pelicans, he averaged 10 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists in a 131-112 win over the Houston Rockets.

He became the first New Orleans Pelicans player to have a triple-double in consecutive matches since Chris Paul in 2008. He joined the likes of Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, and James Harden to score triple-double in four straight games.
