DeVonta Smith Early Life & Education

DeVonta Smith, an American football wide receiver with the Philadelphia Eagles of the National Football League, was born on November 14, 1998. He played college football for Alabama, whereas a senior in 2020, he amassed over 1,800 yards and 23 touchdowns.

Smith received the Heisman Trophy besides many other medals and trophies for his achievements. He was only the fourth wide receiver overall to win the Heisman since Desmond Howard in 1991. Before the Eagles picked him with the tenth overall pick in the NFL Draft of 2021, he won two national titles with Alabama.

In 2017, Smith recorded eight receptions for 160 yards and three touchdowns while a true freshman at Alabama. Smith’s only catch in the 2018 College Football Playoff National Championship against Georgia was the touchdown that won the game 26–23 in overtime.

2019

With 1,256 yards and 14 touchdowns on 68 receptions, Smith led the Crimson Tide in receiving yards and touchdowns. In a 59-31 victory over Ole Miss on September 28, Smith recorded career highs of 274 yards and 5 touchdowns.

Henry Ruggs and Jerry Jeudy, two of Smith’s teammates, renounced their remaining NCAA eligibility after the season in order to enter the 2020 NFL Draft, where they were selected in the first round, while Smith opted to stay at Alabama for his senior season.

2020

With two touchdown receptions against Kentucky on November 21, 2020, Smith broke the all-time SEC career record for receiving touchdowns.

Since the award’s debut in 1998, Smith is the first wide receiver to have won it. The 2020 Heisman Trophy winner, Smith, was chosen over Kyle Trask, Trevor Lawrence, and teammate Mac Jones. He is the first wide receiver to win the prize since Desmond Howard in 1991 and only the fourth overall.

A few days later, in the CFP National Championship Game against Ohio State a few days later, despite leaving the game early in the third quarter because of a hand injury, Smith set records for title game catches (12) and touchdown receptions (three). He also finished with 215 yards. Alabama’s Smith was voted the Offensive MVP of the final game as Alabama prevailed 52-24 to win its sixth championship in 12 years.

Smith broke over seven school receiving records while playing for Alabama. Smith agreed to take part in the 2021 Senior Bowl, but he did not. Because of his diminutive stature and athletic prowess, his teammates at Alabama gave him the moniker “Slim Reaper.”

The Philadelphia Eagles, who had moved up two spots to take him, with the tenth overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, chose Smith. On June 3, 2021, he agreed to a four-year rookie contract worth $20.1 million.

2021

Smith’s first NFL grab resulted in his first career touchdown against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 1. Smith had a strong first campaign for the Eagles, hauling in 64 passes for 916 yards and 5 scores.
