Early career

Algieri’s journey in martial arts began when he was 10 years old and started training in Chinese Kenpo under the guidance of Robert Mauro. By the age of 15, he had attained a black sash. At 16 years old, he began competing in amateur kickboxing, ultimately achieving two Catholic League titles and one Catholic State Championship. After finishing high school, Algieri spent three seasons as an assistant coach to the St. Anthony’s Friar Wrestling team before turning professional at the age of 19, following an undefeated amateur career that culminated with him winning the USKBA Northeast Championship.

Algieri went pro in 2008 and had an 18-0 record with 8 knockouts. He fought in the light welterweight and welterweight divisions and won a unanimous decision against Emmanuel Taylor in 2014, which led to his inclusion in the world rankings. Prior to this fight, Algieri had also defeated Jose Alejo and Mike Arnaoutis. He signed with Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing after winning his 10th fight.

A split decision victory over Ruslan Provodnikov on June 14, 2014, gave Algieri the WBO junior welterweight title despite the fact that he was twice knocked down and had an eye injury that affected his vision for the duration of the bout. Algieri outlasted his opponent over the course of the full 12 rounds of the fight by employing his powerful jab and outside boxing. For Algieri’s HBO debut, the bout averaged 1.046 million viewers, which received outstanding ratings.

Algieri got a chance to fight Manny Pacquiao for the WBO Welterweight title in 2014 after performing in the Provodnikov fight. Despite being an underdog, Algieri lost the fight to Pacquiao via unanimous decision after being knocked down six times, ending his undefeated streak. He defeated Erick Bone on December 5, 2015, by unanimous decision after knocking him out in the eighth round. Prior to the match, Bone had lost a fifth-round knockout to Shawn Porter.

On April 16, 2016, Chris Algieri fought against rising star Errol Spence Jr. in an important bout for both fighters. Spence dominated the fight, winning every round and stopping Algieri in the fifth round. Algieri received $325,000 for the fight, which he was unhappy with, while Spence earned $225,000. In November 2018, after a two-and-a-half-year hiatus, Algieri returned to the ring and defeated Angel Hernandez via unanimous decision after ten rounds. The fight was held at The Paramount in Huntington, New York, where Algieri had previously fought in eight consecutive matches between 2011 and 2014.

Promoter Eddie Hearn had better opponents lined up for WBO light welterweight champion Maurice Hooker, including Chris Algieri, in December 2018. At the Hulu Theater in New York City, Algieri defeated Danny Gonzalez, a longtime sparring partner, in a 10-round fight by unanimous decision. Despite the bout being tight, Algieri was able to win with his jab.

Algieri was set to fight Tommy Coyle in June 2019 as part of the Joshua vs. Ruiz undercard. He hoped to win and get closer to another world title opportunity, specifically the WBO title against Hooker.

On December 11, 2021, in Merseyside, England, Chris Algieri faced off against Conor Benn in his final bout. In the fourth round, he was knocked out.
