Why Chelsea star Jorginho needs to prove himself all over again
When Jorignho first arrived alongside Maurizio Sarri at Stamford Bridge, the 27-year-old arrived as what was effectively Chelsea’s only arrival in the summer window.
Manchester City were shocked that they lost out on the midfielder’s signature to Chelsea, but with his former boss joining the south Londoners, it was little surprise that the Italian joined him there. However, since then Jorginho has divided opinion among both fans and critics with many suggesting he should be dropped.
The Sun has recently reported that the Chelsea fans are not happy with the 27-year-old’s performances of late with the Evening Standard and the Telegraph further revealing that many inside Chelsea believing that Sarri relies too much on Jorginho. While that may be true, with the Italian getting man-marked out of the game against Arsenal, Everton, Tottenham and even Bournemouth, the 27-year-old is still rated highly in Europe.
His skill and talent are always on show, and while that has changed in recent months, Jorginho needs to rediscover himself and prove to the Premier League again, exactly why Maurizio Sarri relies on him so much. However, at the same time, the former Napoli boss needs to find a way to keep the Italian in the game and maybe adjust his formation to add a double pivot.
While the 27-year-old can operate alone and prefers to operate alone at the base of the midfield trio, Jorginho needs to be able to have someone alongside him to help proceedings.
Neither Matteo Kovacic nor Ross Barkley can do that and one man who could have done was Cesc Fabregas, but he is currently playing for AS Monaco. Chelsea needed to bring in a replacement for the wonderful Spaniard over the January window but failed in their pursuit of Leandro Parades with PSG winning that race.
They need to find an answer, but at the same time Jorginho needs to up his game and reproduce some of the performances he did earlier in the season. While the Italian does excel at passing the ball, he needs to be more proactive while sensing danger around him.
So the question is why hasn’t Jorginho been able to replicate his performances at Naples in England? Is it because the Premier League is at a much faster level than the Serie A or is simply because Jorginho knows that no matter how he plays, Maurizio Sarri won’t drop him? Either way, something needs to change, otherwise, both player or/and manager could find themselves leaving the club.
