Nicolo Zaniolo would be the perfect summer signing for Chelsea

According to the Football London, Chelsea are keeping tabs on Roma wonderkid Nicolo Zaniolo, with Juventus and Real Madrid also interested in securing the services of the 19-year-old.

The report claims that the Blues will need to cough up as much as £38 million, if they are to prise the youngster away from the Serie A.

Zaniolo is currently enjoying his breakout season in the Italian top-flight with Roma and his consistently impressive displays have caught the eyes of several top clubs across Europe. A product of Fiorentina’s youth system, Zaniolo was released by the La Viola in 2016 and he joined the academy of Serie B outfit Virtus Entella.

The 19-year-old was bought by Inter Milan back in 2017 but he was traded to Roma at the start of the ongoing campaign without making a single competitive appearance.

Zaniolo has accumulated three goals and supplied two assists from 14 appearances for Roma in the Serie A this season. His impressive performances has earned him a senior international call-up for the UEFA Nations League, though he didn’t make an appearance.

Standing at 6ft. 3 inches, Zaniolo is a technically gifted and tactically versatile midfielder who is capable of playing in multiple positions across the midfield. While he is essentially a natural playmaker by trade, the youngster has been used in a withdrawn role in midfield or in the wide areas. He does not have blistering pace but quick feet, combined with his technical abilities and mesmerizing dribbling skills allows him to work his way past the defenders.

The 19-year-old is someone who has the vision to spark creativity in the final third, while also having a tendency to make runs into the box to get into scoring positions. He knows exactly how to create space and work the channels, drawing the defenders out of their positions with his clever movement off the ball.

Furthermore, the youngster is quite precise with his finishing inside the box and doesn’t hesitate to test goalkeepers with long-range efforts.

To put things into perspective, Zaniolo is still a bit away from being a finished product, but he has shown the glimpses to become one of the best in the game. In fact, a move to Chelsea can help him take his career to the next level, with Maurizio Sarri currently at the helm of affairs at Stamford Bridge.

Truth be told, the youngster would be a perfect fit for Sarri’s possession-based patient build-up play. The manager has been forced to rely heavily on his midfield trio of Jorginho, Mateo Kovacic and N’Golo Kante due to lack of options. Ross Barkley is the only other option, although the former Everton man has been playing a bit-part role.

The departure of Cesc Fabregas in January has further depleted Chelsea’s squad depth. Hence, a promising youngster like Zaniolo can be seen as a welcome addition to the ranks. To add to that, his versatility to play in multiple positions can prove to be a huge asset to the Blues in the longer run.
