Callum Hudson Odoi

Chelsea should allow Callum Hudson-Odoi to join Bayern Munich

The winter transfer window has officially opened and so have the mills of transfer rumours. According to a report by The Guardian, Chelsea are considering a £30m plus add-ons offer from Bayern Munich for their young English prospect Callum Hudson-Odoi.

This is the second offer that Bayern had to come up with to lure away the 18-year-old from the Stamford Bridge. Odoi is under contract at Chelsea until the summer of 2020 and despite not getting regular game time, he is still attracting a lot of attention from the German clubs. Borussia Dortmund and Monchengladbach are both interested in signing U17 World Cup winner (h/t The Guardian).

After Jaden Sancho’s emergence in the Bundesliga, the demand and value of young English players have risen tremendously. To that end, Hudson-Odoi has the potential to do exactly that but he is still 18 and has struggled for regular game time.

The opportunity to play for a top team in the Bundesliga and starting in the tracks of Sancho would be tough to resist. Hudson-Odoi did impress in the pre-season and he was expected to play his part in the current season as well. But after starting the Community Shield, he has featured in just five more games across all competitions.

The youngster has been at Chelsea since the U8 level and is a bright prospect at Stamford Bridge and after playing an important role in the U17 World Cup for the Three Lions, his stakes have risen up sharply. He is one of the fan favourites even after being given limited game time.

Given his potential, the Blues would not want to lose such an amazing talent. Though he is seen as a young emerging talent, there is no possibility of him playing in the Premier League for Chelsea right away.

Hence, it is clear that he would not be able to get into the first team at Chelsea at least for the time being. It could be one of the reasons that he has been reluctant to sign a new contract (h/t The Guardian).

For the Bavarian giants, signing Odoi for a fee of around £30m would be a good deal, given his potential. However, the price could also be a tad too high for a youngster who is not even playing in the first team on a regular basis.

Thus, it remains to be seen how things progress in this case. But Hudson-Odoi is an exceptional talent and if guided in the right way, he could reach greater heights in the near future.
