Chelsea after Spurs star Harry Kane
According to a report by Goal (h/t Football.london), Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane, is a ‘primary target’ for Chelsea in the summer transfer window. The Blues would want to build on their success in the UEFA Champions League and translate it to the Premier League next season.
And in order to achieve that, Kane is seen as a target to solidify their attack. The Spurs striker has spent all his professional career on the Lilywhites’ books but is yet to win a team trophy at the age of 24. While he is a good catch for just about any team in the world, we see why Chelsea need the striker more than any other option in the market.
The problem of goals
Chelsea need to add goals to their game. While they may have just about scraped to a 4th-place finish last time around, they scored 25 fewer goals than champions, Manchester City. This problem stemmed from the fact that their forwards were just not scoring enough, with their top-scorer being a midfielder.
Jorginho, their holding midfielder, converted 7 penalties in the league to finish as their leading goal-getter this season. This is after them spending an eye-watering £47.6million on Timo Werner last summer, which is a cause for concern. While the German cannot be termed as a flop after just one season, his goal output was poor.
He netted just 6 times in 35 Premier League games. The others weren’t any better. Albeit due to a lack of starts, Olivier Giroud and Tammy Abraham managed just 10 goals between them. This is not good enough for a team that wants to win the league, and they would know that this is one area where they should improve.
The midfield seems set with Jorginho, N’Golo Kante, and Mateo Kovacic while the defence has had a facelift ever since Thomas Tuchel took charge. The Blues kept 11 clean sheets in their 19 league games under the German, and just once did they concede two goals in a game.
The potential sale of strikers
With those two areas looking stellar for at least the upcoming season, it is their attack that needs urgent strengthening. That is because three of their strikers could be shown the door in the summer – Olivier Giroud, Mitchy Batshuayi, and Tammy Abraham. Evening Standard reports that Giroud is close to joining AC Milan.
Abraham, on the other hand, is a subject of serious interest from Aston Villa (h/t The Mirror), the club where he spent some time out on loan. The Englishman was snubbed consistently towards the end of the season by Tuchel and his exit would not come as a surprise.
Football.london mentions Chelsea’s desire to sell Michy Batshuayi as he enters the final year of his contract. This creates an unsettling scenario for anyone associated with Chelsea considering Werner could well be the only natural No.9 at the club next season.
And this is why breaking the bank for Harry Kane makes complete sense. He could be the missing piece to Tuchel’s Premier League-winning puzzle and his exploits are no secret. This year’s Premier League Golden Boot and Playmaker Award winner can add a lot of goals to Chelsea’s attack and has the potential to carry them to glory single-handedly.

You don’t score over 240 senior goals if you’re not a good striker. For Kane, it would be a short trip from N17 to Stamford Bridge and Chelsea would have a brilliant striker in their ranks. Win-win! Well, unless you’re a Spurs fan.
