Celtic should sign Maryan Shved as back-up for James Forrest

According to the Scottish Sun, Celtic have been offered the chance to sign Ukrainian international winger Maryan Shved in the January transfer window.

The same report claims that Shved’s current club Karpaty Lviv value him at £2million, a fee that should be well within the reach of the Scottish giants.

However, it is understood that Celtic will only pursue an interest in the 21-year-old Ukrainian if they can offload some of their fringe players. (h/t Scottish Sun)

Celtic have already bolstered their attack with the signings of Vakoun Issouf Bayo, Timothy Weah and Oliver Burke and the Bhoys look a much more well-stocked and formidable unit heading into the second half of the season. Brendan Rodgers’s side is currently level on points with their archrivals Rangers after a 1-0 defeat in the Old Firm derby but they will still fancy their chances of getting their hands on the Scottish Premiership crown.

As things stand, Celtic have all their bases covered but they should not hesitate to carry out more business to assemble an even stronger unit. And Ukraine’s highly-rated prospect Maryan Shved is certainly a good choice for the Bhoys.

Considered as one of the most talented Ukrainian footballers of his generation, Maryan Shved is a diminutive right-winger by trade but he has also been used in a No.10 role owing to his versatility and technical ability as a creative ace. Primarily a left-footed player, Shved is adept at cutting inside with his pace, acceleration and trickery onto his stronger foot, drifting to a more central attacking position and finding space to have a crack on goal.

Blessed with a fine technique, the 21-year-old excels with his lightning pace and wonderful close control in tight areas. His low centre-of-gravity allows him to keep good body balance and he is more than capable of running through the defenders with his directness, despite being a bit compromised on the physical side of his game.

Furthermore, Shved is known for his ability to play perfectly-timed through balls to his teammates from the wide areas and he is equally good at linking up with short and incisive passes in the final third.

To put things into perspective, he would be a good squad player for Celtic, providing cover and competition for the likes of James Forrest and Scott Sinclair. Both the players have done well this season but Celtic should not hesitate to strengthen further.

That said, Maryan Shved is a player with a massive potential who has all the makings of developing into a top-level playmaker and Celtic should embrace the opportunity to sign him with both hands.
