The Minnesota Timberwolves selected Johnson with the eleventh overall pick in the 2019 NBA draft on June 20, 2019, and immediately traded him and Dario are to the Phoenix Suns for Jarrett Culver, the sixth pick in the draft. The trade was completed on July 6, with the Suns later announcing that Johnson had been signed that day. Johnson made his NBA debut on October 26, 2019, coming off the bench in a 130-122 win over the Los Angeles Clippers.
