Newcastle United Opinion: Why Rafael Benitez should go for Stefano Sensi?

According to a report from the Northern Echo, Newcastle United are interested in signing Sassuolo midfielder Stefano Sensi in the summer.

The Italian, 23, has enjoyed an excellent season in the Serie A and has played 24 times across all competitions, and even scored in the thrilling 3-3 draw with Fiorentina. His brilliant form saw Italy manager Roberto Mancini hand him his first cap against USA back in November and won his second last month, scoring in the 6-0 rout of Licheinstein in the Euros qualifiers.

Considering how good Stefano Sensi has been for Sassuolo in the Serie A and the likes of AC Milan, Inter and Barcelona also keeping tabs on him, Newcastle United definitely will have to break the bank to sign him.

Stefano Sensi

Newcastle will have some tough decisions to take ahead of the 2019/20 campaign. Jonjo Shelvey has endured an injury-hit campaign but that hasn’t stopped him from attracting West Ham’s interest. Isaac Hayden, despite impressing with his combative displays in the middle of the park since Christmas, could also leave Tyneside in the summer due to personal reasons.

Above all, Mohamed Diame’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season as well. The trio’s potential departure in the summer would leave the Magpies very light in midfield, leaving Rafael Benitez concerned.

To solve the midfield conundrum, Benitez should sign Stefano Sensi and the acquisition of such a coveted player like the Italian would be a massive coup for the Tyneside-based outfit.

Sensi is an all-action midfielder who can protect the back four, control the tempo of the game and use his passing range to create chances for his teammates.

The diminutive 23-year-old is a deep-lying playmaker by trade, adept at creating chances and chipping in with odd goals but it is his overall contribution to the team in terms of ball retention skills, passing and relentless work-rate that make him such a valuable asset.

The two-cap Italy international is tenacious, technical and has good spatial awareness that allows him to take promising positions and keep things ticking for his team. Sensi uses his low centre of gravity to good effect, twisting and turning to evade challenges and make runs in the box when given any opportunity.

He is a set-piece expert as well as a good tackler and controller of the game. He combines his stamina and energy with his composure of the ball and could be a top partner for the promising Sean Longstaff at the heart of Newcastle’s midfield next campaign.

Verdict

Newcastle showed their ambitions of staying in the Premier League by breaking the bank for Miguel Almiron in January. But if they are to fight for a place in the top eight, they will need to spend big again on Stefano Sensi.
