Arsenal Opinion: Why the Gunners should go all out to sign Gelson Martins?

According to a report from the Sun, Arsenal would be offered a chance to sign the Portugal international Gelson Martins at the end of the season, with Atletico Madrid keen on offloading the winger just one year after they signed him from Sporting Lisbon.

Arsenal were interested in signing the 23-year-old last summer but Sporting turned down a £26million offer, leaving Gelson Martins furious. But the Portuguese winger was later purchased by Atletico Madrid, although the player failed to convince Diego Simeone of his talents at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Martins was shipped out on loan to AS Monaco in January and he has apparently caught the attention of Unai Emery’s Gunners with three goals and three assists in his first eight appearances for the French club. That being said, should Emery reignite his interest in the 23-year-old winger this summer?

Without a shadow of doubt, yes. The Gunners have a really exciting attacking unit but lack a genuine winger in their ranks. To solve that problem, Emery signed Denis Suarez on a loan deal from Barcelona in the January transfer window. However, the Spanish midfielder has failed to impress since his move to Arsenal, managing just six substitute appearances.

It won’t come as a surprise if the Gunners send the on-loan star Suarez back to Barcelona at the end of the season as he has done very little to hope for a permanent transfer. In fact, Emery should do that and go all out to sign Gelson Martins from Atletico Madrid to add pace and creativity to his squad.

Martins is a right winger by trade, but can play as a number 10 or on the other wing. A wide man with blistering pace and real end product, the 23-year-old backs his ability to beat his marker and can hold the ball in tight areas with utmost ease as well. He is very quick, can glide past players without much difficulty and stretch the opposition backline.

The Portugal international is a very dynamic player and his raw pace and direct running would make Arsenal more potent during counter-attacks. Martins’ willingness to run at defenders should make him a perfect fit for Emery’s system which demands the wingers to burst forward with pace and take on the opposition’s full-backs.

Conclusion

Martins is a highly talented player and his qualities are certain to excite the Arsenal fans. He would be a sensational long-term signing for the Gunners, solving the team’s problems at wide department.

All in all, Emery could also be the right man to take the former Sporting man’s game to the next level.
