Why Arsenal should make a move for Kevin Volland in the summer

Back in December 2019, Sky Germany (h/t The Sky Sports) had claimed that Arsenal sent scouts to watch Bayer Leverkusen forward Kevin Volland ahead of the January transfer window. However, no deal materialized in January.

Kevin Volland, 27, has enjoyed a solid Bundesliga campaign, scoring nine goals and assisting a further six times in 21 Bundesliga games. He was the hero of Bayer’s dramatic 4-3 victory over Borussia Dortmund last week. The German has recently told Sport 1 (h/t The Sun) that the style of football in the Premier League would suit him.

Having missed out on signing him during the winter transfer window, Arsenal must rekindle their interest in Volland during the summer transfer window.

The Gunners have an exciting attack, with the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette, Nicolas Pepe and Mesut Ozil more than capable of destroying any team on their day in the Premier League. Yet, they have only managed 36 goals in 26 games and currently lie 10th in the table.

Aubameyang is Arsenal’s top scorer this season but he will be out of contract in less than 18 months’ time.

As per a report from FC Inter (h/t The Sun), Inter Milan will target Aubameyang if they lose Lautaro Martinez in the summer. As the Gabon international will turn 31 in June and is yet to commit his future at the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal must sell him in the summer before his transfer value plummets. And they would be wise to replace him by signing Kevin Volland.

Volland has been at Leverkusen since 2016, joining from Hoffenheim. He has netted 43 goals in 109 Bundesliga games, including nine in 21 appearances this season. The 27-year-old is equally adept at creating chances, with 15 assists in the past two Bundesliga seasons.

The German is a versatile forward, who is capable of playing anywhere across the front-line. He has been majorly used through the middle and on the left by manager Peter Bosz this campaign. Volland has solid experience in the Bundesliga and his versatility to play in different attacking positions would also bring about a healthy competition for places.
