Why Pape Gueye would be a good addition to Arsenal
According to Estadio Deportivo (h/t football.london), Le Havre midfielder Pape Gueye is wanted by Arsenal this summer but they face competition from three other teams.
Serie A sides AC Milan, Udinese, and Spanish side Sevilla are also interested in Gueye, according to Estadio Deportivo (h/t football.london). But the French club want him to sign a new contact, as the 21-year-old’s contract expires in the summer of 2021.
Gueye, 21, who came through Le Havre’s youth ranks, made his professional debut in a 0-0 Ligue 2 tie with Chamois Niortais in May 2017.
With the youngster set to enter the final year of his contract in the summer, Arsenal must look to get a hold of him before the above-mentioned clubs.
Arsenal have endured a torrid start to the season but have managed to put in decent performances after the appointment of Mikel Arteta. They have shown signs of positivity and with the right addition of players in the summer transfer window, the Gunners can challenge in various competitions in the next season.
One area that Arteta should prioritize strengthening is the midfield. Lucas Torreira and Granit Xhaka are the only two defensive midfielders available at the manager’s disposal. And with the Swiss international’s future uncertain at the club, Arsenal need to add depth to their squad.
Therefore, it will be important to bring in reinforcements and Gueye would be a viable option.
Gueye has a long career ahead of him and has shown enough promise in his performances this season for Le Havre. A defensive midfielder by trade, he is capable of playing higher up the pitch too. His two assists this season are proof of his ability to contribute while going forward.
The 21-year-old has been brilliant since his time with the senior team and that has helped him make 6 appearances for the French U20 side.
As far as the Arsenal are concerned, his inclusion in the squad would also bring in healthy competition for Torreira and Xhaka.
- Why Arsenal should go for Lille defender Gabriel Magalhaes in the summer
- Why Arsenal did the right thing by holding onto Mesut Ozil despite interest
- Why Arsenal should have signed Napoli’s Dries Mertens in January
While the Gunners have improved, the players need competition and Gueye’s talent would be great to boost their squad depth.
Therefore, Arsenal must go all out and sign the French youth international in the summer.
