Why Arsenal signing Jonathan David would make for an ideal move

According to a report by Jeunes Footeux (h/t The Sun), Arsenal are among the seven clubs monitoring Gent striker Jonathan David.

Amidst the fierce competition, the Gunners would have to part with a fee of about £18m to acquire the youngster’s services. With 15 goals to his name in the Jupiler League this term so far, should the North London outfit make a move for him once the summer transfer window commences?

Arsenal have had a season to forget for numerous reasons. They lack adequate depth in certain areas and even after sacking Unai Emery midway through the season and replacing him with Mikel Arteta, the Londoners appear to be struggling, conceding 34 goals so far.

To make matters worse, their troubles on the other end of the pitch have affected their performances adversely. A tally of 36 goals scored hardly does anything for a team that should ideally be aiming for a Champions League spot at the least.

Fourth-placed Chelsea have scored 45 goals so far, thus illustrating the massive gulf as far as the attack is concerned.

Now, Arsenal have big names like Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette and Nicolas Pepe in the mix. And yet, barring Aubameyang, the other two players have not done much as far as scoring goals are concerned.

Pepe has chipped in with 4 league goals while Lacazette has scored 6. To avoid a potential disaster, Arsenal would be wise to sign a player to provide back-up and adequate support for Aubameyang, who has shouldered the goalscoring burden.

With 18 goals scored across competitions and an average of 1.8 shots per game in the Europa League, David would be a viable option to add depth and quality to the Gunners’ attack. Thus, Arsenal should not think twice before signing a youngster of his calibre in the summer.
