Giovanni Di Lorenzo can replace Cedric Soares at Southampton

Southampton’s season has turned out to be a pretty big disappointment, given the massive expectations that were placed on them and former manager Mark Hughes. The atmosphere at this club changed fast in the opening months of the season.

By Christmas, Hughes was already out of a job and Ralph Hasenhuttl took charge of this Saints team. The Austrian did have an immediate impact as the mood changed fast but of late, they’ve fallen back into their habits.

They currently find themselves at the summit of the relegation zone. With Burnley just 3 points ahead of them as well, they can still push for a better position.

Despite going the entirety of January having not lost a single game, expected losses to Manchester United and Arsenal and a disappointing defeat at the hands of Cardiff City meant that all their January hard work was effectively flushed down the drain.

There are various issues within this squad that Hasenhuttl will have to address before the start of next season if he hopes to avoid another relegation dogfight next season, provided they’re able to stay up in the Premier League.

While there are various attacking reinforcements that need to be brought in at the earliest possible opportunity, one departure which has affected their season quite badly was Cedric Soares’ loan switch to Italian giants Inter Milan.

Given their current squad, the only real alternative for the talented Portuguese right-back is 20-year-old Yan Valery. While he has been in decent form since being forced into the side, he doesn’t seem like the kind of player who can deliver consistently.

This is exactly why Hasenhuttl should make a move for Italian wing-back Giovanni Di Lorenzo, who currently plays in the Serie A for Empoli. His performances this season have gained many plaudits and his numbers are quite good too.

A pacy wing-back who was developed at the Reggina academy, the former Matera man has shown his class on multiple occasions this season with brilliant movement and some sharp passing. His attacking and finishing have been commendable too.

His brilliant attacking intent has been rewarded this season, having scored 2 and assisted 2 from his 25 league appearances. This can be a signing that is guaranteed to work out and give the Saints’ requirement, this seems like a tailor-made transfer.
