Tottenham FC Opinion: Said Benrahma would be a perfect signing for Spurs

According to reports from Football London, Spurs are interested in signing Brentford winger Said Benrahma in the summer. London rivals Arsenal, Crystal Palace and West Ham all keeping close tabs on the Algerian ace.

A product of Nice’s youth system, Benrahma spent time on loan at Angers, Ajaccio and Chateauroux due to lack of regular minutes, with his sparkling form at the latter prompting the Bees to snap him up for less than £5 million last summer.

The 23-year-old has taken the Championship by storm in his debut season, registering 9 goals and 11 assists from 33 appearances and establishing himself as one of the most dangerous players in England’s second tier.

The Algerian international struggled for consistency earlier in the season but he has played a pivotal role in the Bees’ turnaround of fortunes in the second half of the season, scoring 8 goals in 12 league games since the turn of the year to put himself on the radar of some of the Premier League giants.

Brentford’s £30 million valuation might raise a few eyebrows, but with Benrahma still having plenty of years remaining on his contract and going by the kind of form that he has shown this season, the Bees have every reason to ask for big-money to part ways with their prized asset.

Benrahma has thrived as an inverted winger down the left at Griffin Park, although he has also been deployed on the right and through the centre occasionally, owing to his versatility.

The Algerian likes to combine his lightning pace with his dribbling skills and quick acceleration to take on the opposition’s full-backs, often using his sharpness, agility and exceptional close control to good effect in tight areas along the flanks.

He is not only about pace and skills but he has a lot more to his game, with his wonderful deliveries from crosses and vision to unleash key passes making him a much more complete player.

To go with his obvious flair and trickery on the ball, Benrahma likes to link up with his teammates down the flanks with short exchanges, often teeing them up for a shot on goal. The Algerian himself has a wonderful eye for goal and he can be devastating on the counter-attack as well.

To put things into perspective, he would be a welcome addition to Tottenham’s squad next summer, with the Lilywhites in dire need of doing some business after failing to sign a new player for two transfer windows.

Although a back up for Harry Kane and a replacement for Mousa Dembele remain a priority for Mauricio Pochettino, the north Londoners should also look to acquire Said Benrahma in a bid to add more pace and guile to their attack.

Erik Lamela has done a good job when called into action but the Argentine international has once again struggled with injuries.

Lucas Moura is another versatile player who is capable of playing out wide on either flank and also as a striker in a two-man attack, whilst Heung-Min Son has proven himself as an ideal partner for Kane up front.

Spurs have versatile attackers in their ranks but they have still found themselves short of cover at certain times, particularly when the likes of Son, Kane, Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen have been unavailable.

Benrahma has shown plenty of promise in the Championship this season and is very much capable of taking the step up to the Premier League. Spurs can certainly do with a bit more depth and quality in their squad, and that said, they should not hesitate to splash the cash on the Algerian in the summer.
