Spurs Opinion: Pochettino should move for David Neres in the summer

According to the Calciomercato, Spurs are weighing up a move for Ajax attacker David Neres in the summer, with manager Mauricio Pochettino reportedly looking for new options to bolster his attacking unit.

The same report claims that Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund as well as Ligue 1 champions PSG are also interested in striking a deal for the talented and versatile Brazilian attacker at the end of the season.

Neres has been a standout performer in the Eredivisie for the Dutch giants and has contributed with a total of 8 goals and 8 assists from 25 league appearances, adding to his remarkable tally of 14 goals and 11 assists last season.

A former youth international for Brazil, Neres earned his senior international debut against the Czech Republic during the recent international break, impressing with a goal and an assist in his very first game.

The 22-year-old has also made a big impact in the UEFA Champions League, registering 2 assists and scoring a vital goal in the 4-1 drubbing of Real Madrid in the Round of 16.

The former Sao Paulo academy product has proven that he is capable of delivering the goods against top-quality opposition at the highest level in Europe and Tottenham’s links with the Brazilian should create plenty of noise amongst the fans at north London.

It has been ages since the Lilywhites have signed a new player, with Lucas Moura being the last fresh recruit to arrive in January 2018. Having made a wonderful start to life at their new stadium with a 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace, Spurs should now look to add more depth and quality to their squad to give themselves a better chance of challenging for silverware on all fronts.

To put things into perspective, David Neres would be a wonderful signing for Spurs as he has already shown that he can be a massive threat in the final third.

A versatile left-footed creative ace, the Brazilian is capable of playing out wide on either flank and also through the centre in a No.10 role behind the striker.

Noted for his pace, flair and trickery on the ball, Neres not only excels with his ability to dribble at pace but he is also equally adept at finding the correct pass for his teammates in the final third.

Blessed with a good eye for goal and an absolute wand of a left foot, Neres likes to use his pace and trickery to run at the opposition’s defence, often leaving the defenders for dead with clever changes of direction and sharp turns.

He is far from a one-trick pony though, with his tactical intelligence and undisputed technical abilities quite apparent from his execution of subtle flick-ons, layoffs and crisp through balls in and around the penalty area.

Owing to the threat that he poses with his pace, agility and sharpness in the attacking third, the Brazilian often draws defenders out from their positions to create openings, allowing others to pull the strings.

To add to that, Neres attacks the open spaces down the flanks really well and his link-up play in crunch situations complements his individual brilliance perfectly.

Lack of depth and quality in their reserves have been an Achilles heel for Spurs in recent seasons and bringing in a talented attacker like Neres would be next to striking gold. Heung-min Son and Harry Kane have shouldered the responsibility of scoring goals, with Lucas Moura also chipping in with some valuable strikes.

However, Spurs need to increase competition for places in their ranks and Neres might prove to be an upgrade on someone like Erik Lamela in the longer run. Also, Pochettino should not hesitate to get rid of dead wood in the form of Vincent Janssen and Fernando Llorente to accommodate fresh faces.

Ajax have a reputation of being shrewd sellers in the transfer market and they are unlikely to part ways with David Neres on the cheap. Spurs are likely to have to shell out a handsome ransom for the Brazilian but it would certainly be an investment worth it.
