Moussa Marega would be the ideal January business for Man United

According to an earlier report from the Daily Star, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham were weighing up a move for Porto’s Malian international striker Moussa Marega. However, a move to the Premier League didn’t quite materialize and the Malian continued to shine at Porto.

The 27-year-old played for some lower division clubs in France and Ligue 1 outfit Amiens before moving to the Portuguese top flight with Porto back in 2016. He didn’t get a chance to prove his worth immediately and was loaned out to Vitoria de Guimares for the 2016-17 season where he tasted commendable success, scoring 13 goals and providing 6 assists.

His heroics on his loan spell earned him a starter’s role in Porto first-team for the following season and the Malian surpassed all expectations, accumulating 22 goals and 4 assists. Along with Vincent Aboubakar and Yacine Brahimi, Moussa Marega was a part of Porto’s all-African trio that helped the Portuguese giants claim their first domestic title in five years.

Marega has hit the ground running this season as well, scoring 6 goals and providing 6 assists from 11 appearances. The 27-year-old has been equally impressive in the group stages of the Champions League, scoring 5 goals and helping his team reach the knockout stages.

Standing at 6ft. With a towering and sinewy frame, Moussa Marega is an absolute beat of a centre-forward whose primary attributes are his strength, aerial ability and eye for goal. A tactically versatile attacker, Marega is not only capable of playing as a centre-forward but can also operate as a supporting striker or a wide forward.

Marega is known for his positive body language and never-say-die attitude and backs himself to maraud his way through the defenders with his pace, strength and skills. An instinctive striker by nature, the 27-year-old’s ability to lose his marker with subtle movements coupled with his ability to get off the ground quickly to beat his defensive counterparts to the aerial balls makes him a potent threat in the final third.

However, the most impressive thing about him is his eye for goal. The Malian is never hesitant to put his foot through the ball and likes to keep the goalkeeper on his toes.

The 27-year-old has averaged 3.6 shots, 3 successful aerial duels and 1.4 key passes per game this term in the Portuguese Primeira Liga, figures which speak volumes of his ability as a centre-forward.

To put things into perspective, Manchester United should make a move for the powerful African beast in January to bolster their misfiring attack. The Red Devils have found it hard to hit the ground running this season and Jose Mourinho’s men currently sit 6th in the standings, 16 points behind leaders Liverpool.

While much of United’s woes this season has been down to their leaky backline, the attackers haven’t managed to light up the scene either. Romelu Lukaku who supposed to be the spearhead of the attack for the Red Devils but the Belgian has largely underwhelmed, forcing Mourinho to rely on the likes of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial. Both Martial and Rashford have shown plenty of promise but United need a much more finished product to take them to greater heights in the Premier League.

And Moussa Marega certainly fits the bill at Old Trafford. That said, they should go all out to sign him in January.
