3 PL clubs who would benefit by signing Weston McKennie

Schalke midfielder Weston McKennie is looking for a challenging move to the Premier League according to Sky Sports.

The United States of America international has been with Schalke since 2016 having joined them from the USA’s FC Dallas academy. At Schalke, the midfielder has gone from strength to strength. He now hopes that his displays will see him get a chance to ply his trade in the Premier League.

McKennie finished the 2019/20 Bundesliga season with 28 appearances, in which he scored thrice. A true midfield warrior, the 21-year-old has shown the creativity he possesses, while he is capable of dealing with the physical nature of English football as well.

So, which Premier League clubs should move to secure the signing of McKennie?

West Ham

West Ham are just four points above the danger zone and are in a dire need for reinforcements. And the midfield department should be one of the top priorities for the club.

The Hammers’ captain Mark Noble is entering the last few years of his career, while Jack Wilshire has struggled with injuries. Carlos Sanchez has left without completing the season after failing to impress the boss. Whereas Tomas Soucek is only on loan till the end of the season.

This leaves a huge gap in the West Ham midfield, leaving them with only Declan Rice in full ability to start week in and week out, with no real cover. But the England international has also been linked with an exit.

In this regard, USMNT ace McKennie would be a good choice for the team.

Newcastle United

With a takeover edging closer and closer there is going to be new recruitment over the summer for Newcastle United.

Newcastle need to bolster their midfield ranks this summer. Jonjo Shelvey and Isaac Hayden have been the preferred options in the middle. Nabil Bentaleb was signed in January, but he is only on loan and should return to his parent club once the season ends. Furthermore, Matty Longstaff’s contract is on the verge of expiry as well.

Thus, Newcastle must consider making a move for McKennie. In the Schalke midfielder, the Magpies can find an outstanding talent and a player who can become a great addition to their first team.

Arsenal

Under Mikel Arteta Arsenal look to find their old winning ways, and they must look to reinforce their midfield in the summer.

There is no clarity on Matteo Guendouzi’s future ever since the incident against Brighton and Dani Ceballos will return to Real Madrid at the end of the season once his loan deal runs out. This would leave Arsenal with just Granit Xhaka, Lucas Torreira and Joe Willock as options in midfield.

Furthermore, Mohamed Elneny has spent this season on-loan at Besiktas and there is no certainty on the player’s future either.

Thus, signing a player like Mckennie this summer would help Arsenal in the long run. The 21-year-old would add great value and depth to the current midfield options and give Mikel Arteta an extra pair of legs.
