WWE SmackDown Results and Grades 1 May 2020: Did Otis qualify for Money in the Bank 2020?

WWE SmackDown Results and Grades: There were a couple of huge Money in the Bank 2020 qualifier matches on this week’s SmackDown.

Otis and Dolph Ziggler squaring off was the most important one while Mandy Rose also battled Carmella for a place in the PPV.

There was also one big clash with Daniel Bryan facing off against a heel too, and here are the grades and results for this week’s WWE SmackDown.

Bryan lays it down

Bryan kicked off this week’s show with a rather good promo about how he loves wrestling and the uniqueness of the 2020 Money in the Bank match.

That will be held in WWE HQ and highlighted how important this match has been in his career. Bryan also spoke about the wrongs which led to Drew Gulak missing out on the match.

His rival for the night, King Corbin, came out to interrupt Bryan. The King said he would win the Money in the Bank but Bryan reminded him of the blown opportunity in the past.

Grade B

Not really a fan of promos starting off a show but this was a decent one especially with Bryan cutting a really good one.

It was also great that WWE touched upon the King’s failed attempts from the past as it angered the heel a bit too.

Bryan vs Corbin

It was Corbin that started off well as he pummelled Bryan early on. The Yes Man couldn’t get enough of an offence going until later in the match.

He got some kicks in and even locked in a half crab but Corbin was able to escape. Things went a little crazy in the end as Corbin brought a ladder into the ring and tried to do his finisher from the top.

However, Bryan countered that into a Yes Lock at the top of the ladder before Shinsuke Nakamura and Cesaro attacked Bryan to hand Corbin a DQ loss.

Grade B

This match actually was going well until the finish in the end. Bringing the ladder in didn’t really make a lot of sense but WWE were selling Money in the Bank, so there had to be some shenanigans.

Cesaro and Nakamura are a thorn in Bryan’s side now, but are they siding with Corbin more than Sami Zayn?

Let him in

WWE Universal Champion Braun Strowman came out to deliver a promo but was cut out by Bray Wyatt.

Wyatt decided to have some fun and spoke about how Strowman was a sheep and Wyatt helped him out by leading him.

Wyatt also claimed he would win their title clash at the PPV but Strowman wanted a piece of his rival now.

However, Wyatt decided to end the segment there and said they would meet soon.

Grade B

Wyatt is always great at storytelling and he did that once again. It was also smart of WWE to allow Bray to do most of the talking as Strowman isn’t the best when cutting promos.

Sheamus continues to destroy

Another SmackDown, another squash match for Sheamus. The Celtic Warrior came out to face Leon Ruff and made light work of his opponent.

This has been going on for a few weeks now but he seems to have another big rival. Michael Cole has been lambasted by Sheamus in the past for cutting off his celebrations and he did that once again.

Cole was speaking about the returning Jeff Hardy next week, and Sheamus said he would be waiting for him.

Finally we seem set for a real battle as Sheamus vs Hardy should be interesting. Both have been away for a while and it will be interesting to see who comes out on top in this clash.

Rose vs Carmella

Carmella and Rose battled for a spot in the Money in the Bank match. However, Sonya Deville had a role to play in the outcome.

She came out and spoke about how she sacrificed herself last year to help Rose make it to the Money in the Bank PPV.

That was enough of a distraction for Carmella to pick up the win. Deville then demolished Rose and threw her about as a trainer had to come and check up on the Golden Goddess.

While the match wasn’t all that great the storyline between Rose and Deville is progressing really well. Deville has been incredible since the breakup of Fire and Desire and she cut out another great promo.

Her actions were top-notch too and it will be interesting to see what is next for the pair.

Forgotten Sons in action

The New Day have new rivals in the Forgotten Sons as the pair battled on SmackDown. The tag titles weren’t on the line but Miz and John Morrison came out to do some commentary.

New Day might have won the tag titles recently, but it were the Sons that picked up a huge win, thanks to then nullifying Big E before destroying Kofi Kingston.

The Forgotten Sons seem like the real deal at the moment as they put in a great show. New Day looked good but this was the Sons at their best. WWE could be setting up a triple threat match again, and the Sons deserve to be in the title hunt.

Otis vs Ziggler

Otis came out all guns blazing after seeing his girlfriend Rose getting injured. He hammered Ziggler before missing out and hitting the ring post.

That allowed Ziggler to gain the upper hand and he took control of the match. Otis also tried to hit a Caterpillar but missed and Ziggler was able to get the Zigzag. However, Ziggler tried to get a few more hits in before Otis overcame the Showoff with the win.

It was great seeing Otis make it to Money in the Bank but the match wasn’t all that great. What was a downer was not seeing Ziggler reach the PPV as he deserves to be in the spotlight more.

Otis in Money in the Bank is a surprise given that he is a tag team specialist, but this could also see Ziggler do something crazy at the PPV.

SmackDown ratings

Smackdown’s ratings went down a bit when compared to the previous week, according to Showbuzz Daily.

SmackDown brought in 1,941,000 TV viewers in the first hour and 1,896,000 viewers in the second hour.

The average of the two hours was 1,919,000 and this was the first time SmackDown brought in less than two million viewers since shifting to Fox.
