What is the WWE plane ride from hell all about?

The return flight to the United States in May 2002 following the last live televised event under the name WWF – WWF Insurrextion, is dubbed as Plane Ride from Hell

The WWE (WWF-then) hosted WWF Insurrextion, as a part of their European Tour, in May 2002. The event was held at the Wembley Arena in London.

On the 5th of May, a number of wrestlers and management members took a plane from the United Kingdom to the United States.

That flight to the US is believed to be one of the most turbulent flights ever witnessed by innocent onlookers, especially the flight crew.

A number of wrestlers got into fights mid-air, some going ahead with sexually inappropriate advances, and whatnot. The main reason for the same – almost everyone was inebriated.

Here are some of the nasty events that took place on that ‘infamous flight.’

The late Curt Hennig and Brock Lesnar picked up a fight mid-air. It escalated from an argument about who was the better amateur wrestler. Lesnar then is believed to have taken down Hennig and put him in a lock.

They had to be separated by Triple H, Paul Heyman and others. However, many believe that the fault was on Hennig’s side.

Scott Hall, another wrestler, who had been suffering from substance abuse, made sexually inappropriate advances towards one of the flight attendants, Heidi Doyle.

Given the condition he was in, he slumped back to his seat, unconscious.

A heavily-drunk Goldust, was accused of causing trouble to his newly-divorced partner Terri Runnels, who was also on the flight.

The most chaotic event that took place that night was ‘Nature Boy’ Ric Flair exposing himself in all his glory in front of the startled flight attendants. Dressed only in his trademark robe, Flair was accused of letting it all hang out.

It is worth noting that executives, notably Vince McMahon were seated in the first-class.

The Aftermath feat. Vice documentary

The immediate aftermath of the ‘Plane Ride From Hell’ saw Curt Hennig and Scott Hall being fired from the WWE. Shortly afterwards, Hennig passed away.

Ric Flair and Goldust were reprimanded by the company. The lawsuit filed by the terror-stricken attendants was taken care of by the WWE.

More recently Vice Studio which has been airing the show, Dark Side of the Ring, released a documentary on the Plane Ride From Hell as a part of episode 8 of the 3rd season.

The episode showcased an elaborate look into the damned private 757 flight.
