Drew McIntyre uses the devastating finisher, The Claymore, but it all came about thanks to a botch

WWE Champion Drew McIntyre was the latest guest on the SeventySix Capital Leadership series as he spoke about his ups and downs in WWE.

McIntyre was called the ‘Chosen One’ by Vince McMahon when he came into WWE at the age of 22. However, things didn’t go as planned as he was released by the company a few years later. That lit a fire under McIntyre as he worked hard on several promotions before coming back to WWE.

McIntyre then won the Royal Rumble before becoming the WWE Champion and he has fulfilled his destiny.

McIntyre also has a devastating finisher, The Claymore, and was asked how he came about it. The Scot first spoke about 3MB and how the attire played a role in all this:

“Regarding my finishing move, the Claymore, this is probably the only good thing that came out when I was at the end of my WWE run where I got fired from the main guy into a bit of a comedy role.

“I wasn’t getting much television time, I wasn’t getting significant matches and I was in a fake 80s rock band which didn’t actually play music when we came out with tight leather pants on.

“We danced around playing air guitar, a bit like a Bill and Ted, I guess.”

McIntyre then explained that he was performing in a match and wanted to use a Big Boot. However, he was scared of something bad happening to his pants:

“On one of these matches I was running to deliver a manoeuvrer to an opponent called the Big Boot where you run and you lift your leg and you kick your opponent in the face much like Hulk Hogan used to do.

“As I was running and I lifted my leg, I realised that my pants were way too tight and lifted my leg to do this manoeuvrer.

“I am on Monday Night Raw, millions of fans are watching live and I am thinking my pants are going to split and this is going to be a pretty embarrassing moment. What am I going to do? So as I lift my right leg, I quickly lifted up my left leg with it to avoid the pants splitting.”

There was more to come as McIntyre injured himself doing the move. However, it all paid off with an agent catching all of this:

“Kicked my opponent, swung around, landed in my own head, knocked myself silly and got out of the ring, was a bit dazed, got myself together, got to the back and one of the agents backstage, a former wrestler came up to me and said ‘That move that you did out there Drew, I don’t know if you can do it without hurting yourself but watch it back. It was pretty freaking cool and I have never seen it before.

“That day, The Claymore was born because of tight leather pants.”

This is a bit of a hilarious story as to how The Claymore came into existence. But it is great for McIntyre as he has one of the best finishers in WWE and many fans can get behind him too.
