WWE on Fox recently posted a picture of the old SmackDown logo and asked a question about which superstar comes to mind after seeing this vintage logo.

The Rock was quick to respond to it and mentioned the name of former manager Harvey Wippleman who he thinks about when he sees the throwback WWE SmackDown logo. He also revealed that it was Wippleman who actually coined the term SmackDown.

Easy answer. C’mon @WWE. The superstar who this show was named after. The superstar responsible for “Smackdown” officially becoming a word in the @MerriamWebster dictionary. And that superstar is… Harvey Whippleman aka Downtown Bruno!

In the past, The Rock has been very complimentary of Wippleman, praising the former manager for helping him early in his career and even giving him a place to live. The Brahma Bull also gifted Wippleman with a brand new car back in 2020.

Wippleman has also been a character represented on the popular NBC show Young Rock.

Who is Harvey Wippleman?

Bruno Lauer, aka Harvey Wippleman, is an American professional wrestling manager and referee known by the ring names Downtown Bruno.

In the 1990s, he made his debut at the WWF, where he managed many wrestlers such as Sid Justice, Kamala, Giant Gonzalez, and Bertha Faye. In 2000 he became the first and the only man to win the WWF Women’s Championship.

As of 2011, Lauer worked with WWE in backstage roles on television and pay-per-view roles. Harvey also made a brief backstage appearance during RAW 25 Years. Wippleman was the one who introduced the near eight-foot-tall Giant Gonzalez to the WWF, thrusting him into a feud with The Undertaker.
