Kurt Angle shares the mistake WWE made in booking Goldberg during first run

Kurt Angle thinks WWE made a mistake in how they booked Goldberg

Bill Goldberg was arguably the greatest wrestler to come out of World Championship Wrestling in the 1990s.

He was a world-famous professional wrestler by the time WWE signed him in 2003 after WCW went out of business in 2001 and WWE purchased their selected assets.

He signed a one-year contract with the promotion and was immediately booked to fight the biggest names in the company at that time.

Goldberg had a feud with The Rock, Chris Jericho, and Brock Lesnar to name a few. But there still wasn’t that same feeling from the fans which they got when they saw him at WCW.

And WWE legend Kurt Angle, who was the one to eliminate Goldberg in his only Royal Rumble appearance back in 2004, stated why that might have been the case.

Goldberg was booked wrong by WWE during the early 2000s

Angle was talking on The Kurt Angle Show earlier this week and stated that WWE booked Goldberg wrong from the start.

Fans saw him dominate matches in WCW, but he was made to fight long, tedious, and ‘even’ matches in WWE.

“They didn’t book him [Goldberg during 2003-04] right. Goldberg made a lot of money for WCW by being dominant, a beast. He dominated the matches, they were two to three minutes tops. That raised eyebrows. Raising eyebrows makes money for the company. And WWE booked him, when he came in in the early 2000s, he was doing 10 to 12 to 15-minute matches.”

Angle does agree that they got it right once. And that was [possibly] when Goldberg beat Brock Lesnar at Survivor Series in 2016.

“And when he had the match with Brock Lesnar when it lasted just 15 seconds, that was the right call. That’s the Goldberg that people want to see. That does raise eyebrows… what hurt him was having him wrestle longer.”

Goldberg has made a couple of returns to the promotion in the past 4-5 years, with his recent, and quite possibly the last one being at Royal Rumble 2021 where he lost to Drew McIntyre.
