Former WWE Champion Drew McIntyre reacts to CM Punk joining AEW

Drew McIntyre has had his say after former WWE star CM Punk made his shock return to pro wrestling debuting at AEW Rampage last week.

McIntyre also left WWE in 2014 and revived his career on the independent scene, something which he respects about Punk’s decision. Punk is returning to wrestling after 7 years out, after his feud with Vince McMahon and WWE.

Talking to Pro Wrestling Bits, the Scotsman said: (h/t Inside Sport)

“Just anything that’s good for wrestling, I’m all about.I was outside the company — 2014 to 2017, working in the independents and with IMPACT, and just trying to make wrestling a healthier, better place, and it’s healthy right now. It’s in an incredible place. It helps that WWE is still at the top leading the charge, and anything that can make it better I’m all about. So, yeah, if it makes a positive difference, it gets a thumbs up from me.”

McIntyre delivered his opinion prior to the rumors coming true. For the last two months, Punk and Daniel Bryan were touted to sign for the promotion. There were no sources for the concreteness of the news.

The decision from Punk is a huge one in the wrestling scene. Punk is arguably one of the biggest names in wrestling history after creating a legacy in WWE. Tony Khan and All Elite Wrestling will be licking their lips with the thought of mixing Punk with some raw talent. He is already tipped to feud with Darby Allin in his opening feud with the company.

History between CM Punk and WWE

CM Punk cut the famous “pipebomb” promo on an episode of RAW from 2011, where his contract with the WWE was up after his WWE Championship match with John Cena at the Money In The Bank pay per view. He felt that he is being held back in favor of the guys the WWE wants to be the face of the organization.

CM Punk also had a problem with how older wrestlers who came out of retirement are given WrestleMania main events like Dwayne The Rock Johnson who had not had a single match in the WWE for 7 years since 2004 until 2011 .

Punk was also wrestling while injured and never given the chance to rest to heal. He was forced to keep wrestling even though he had a staph infection. It was an MRSA that almost killed him. He was also fired from the WWE on his wedding day with AJ Lee .
