Seventh seed Viktoriya Tomova faces Marketa Vondrousova from the Czech Republic in the round of 16 of the WTA Angers Arena Loire Open.

The current Bulgarian No. 1 has achieved a few firsts in 2022. She made her French Open debut as a lucky loser. Tomova lost to Danielle Collins in the first round. In Eastbourne, Tomova defeated Shelby Rogers and Kirsten Flipken in the first two rounds to make her first WTA 500 quarterfinal. She eventually lost to Camila Giorgi. Tomova also made it to her first WTA 125 final at the Budapest Open. She lost to Tamara Korpatsch in the final. Tomova also made it to the top 100 in the rankings this year.

In the round of 32, Tomova came back from a set down to defeat Taiwan’s Joanna Garland 1-6, 6-3, 6-0. She won 71 points compared to just 57 for her opponent.

Marketa Vondrousova

The 2019 French Open runner-up has come into the tournament on the back of some good form. She won both the singles and doubles events in the ITF event in Shrewsbury.

In the first match in Angers, Vondrousova had a tricky proposition as she faced the experienced Yanina Wickmayer. The 23-year-old managed to dominate and win the first set in quick time. Wickmayer tried to come back strong in the second set but Vondrousova held her nerves to complete a 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) win.

Head-to-Head and Prediction

The head-to-head scoreline currently stands at 0-0. However, Vondrousova defeated Tomova in a qualifying match in 2016 at an ITF event in Slovakia.

Prediction: Marketa Vondrousova to win in three sets.
