Why Wolves would be wise to sign Hwang Hee-chan in the near future

Wolverhampton Wanderers are reportedly interested in signing RB Salzburg striker Hwang Hee-chan, as per The Telegraph.

Wolves are ready to move for the South Korea international next year after identifying him as one of their prime targets to strengthen Nuno’s squad. While much of the focus this season has been on Salzburg’s brilliant teenage striker Erling Haaland, Hwang is also emerging as one of the club’s most coveted talents.

Despite failing to dislodge Napoli and Liverpool from the top two spots, Salzburg dazzled in the group stage of the Champions League, with Erling Haaland, Takumi Minamino and Hwang all impressing for the Austrian side. The performances of the South Korea international have not escaped the attention of Nuno Espirito Santo.

Hwang left his homeland for Salzburg in 2015 and he’s enjoyed two separate loan spells since. Shortly after joining Salzburg, he was loaned to Austrian minnows FC Liefering, where he scored 13 goals in 31 matches. His next stint was with German club Hamburg but that wasn’t as successful. Hwang only scored twice in 20 Bundesliga 2 outings.

Wolves desperately need to add to their squad as their workload intensifies. Nuno’s side are defying the odds as they sit in sixth in the league while they have qualified for the knockout stages of the Europa League.

While Hwang wouldn’t relish a footrace against Wolves speedster Adama Traore, it must be noted that pace is one of his biggest assets. Haaland is the bigger and more powerful of the two Salzburg strikers but Hwang is more dangerous down the flanks and in behind.

Right-footed Hwang has improved his goalscoring output this season with nine goals in 20 matches, including three in the Champions League. It is often Hwang’s mobility, tenacity and creativity which allows the Norwegian starlet to grab the headlines with his goals.

Wolves, under Nuno, have performed fantastically in the Premier League. They have proven their class and appear well-resourced enough to cope with the additional demands of European football without letting it affect their assault on the top-six.

However, they have been heavily dependent on Jimenez and Jota. Signing Hwang could be a solution and might propel them to greater heights.

Verdict

Wolves signing Hwang would be an excellent move since he could strike up a similar partnership with Raul Jimenez, who is a fair bit like the prolific youngster. Thus, Nuno and co must go all out to sign him.
