Wolves Opinion: Cedric Soares would be the ideal back up for Doherty

According to claims from Italian outlet Tuttomercatoweb, Wolves are interested in signing Southampton right-back Cedric Soares in the summer.

Soares was loaned out to Inter Milan in January, with new manager Ralph Hasenhuttl preferring youngster Yan Valery at right wing-back.

Tuttomercatoweb, however, claims that Inter do not want to take up the option of buying the Portuguese international for £9million at the end of the season, following his failure to establish himself as the team’s first-choice right-back.

The same report claims that Wolves are prepared to offer the 27-year-old Euro 2016 winner an escape route, with manager Nuno Espirito Santo reportedly on the lookout for options to provide first-choice right wing-back Matt Doherty with some competition.

Soares, who joined Southampton for £3.6 million from Sporting CP back in 2015, has made a total of 119 appearances in all competitions for the Saints.

The Portuguese star has accumulated 2 goals and 10 assists over the course of his three-year spell at the St. Mary’s and he was the first-choice right-back for a long time, only to be usurped by Valery since the arrival of Hasenhuttl.

Wolves’ interest in Soares comes as little surprise given that the Portuguese international is a client of Iberian super agent Jorge Mendes, who has close ties with manager Nuno Espirito Santo and was instrumental in bringing the likes of Rui Patricio, Helder Costa, Ivan Cavaleiro, Joao Moutinho and Ruben Neves to Molineux.

To put things into perspective, Wolves should use their ties with Mendes to lure Soares to Molineux in the summer in a bid to bolster their squad ahead of the upcoming season.

Soares is a proven performer at the Premier League level and certainly fits the bill of an offensive-minded full-back to push Matt Doherty for a place in the first-team.

Although they have been flying high this season, Nuno Santo needs to dip into the transfer window for reinforcements in order to add more depth and quality to his squad.

Wolves would be under pressure to cope with the burden of increased expectations next term, which would only rocket sky-high should they play in Europe, and adequate depth in the reserves could prove to be vital to their success in the foreseeable future.
