Wolves Opinion: Why Edson Alvarez would be a solid signing for Wolves?

According to Mexican outlet Mediotiempo, Wolves are interested in signing Club America defender Edson Alvarez.

The 21-year-old defender recently extended his contract with Club America until 2022, but he has a £7.9 million termination clause, the report adds. That should give Wolves a lot of confidence and they must pay Edson Alvarez’s release clause to sign him this summer.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s Wolves enjoyed a really good season back in the Premier League as they finished seventh in the table. The Midlands club also qualified for Europe and Nuno will be determined to make waves in the Europa League.

The Premier League is already very demanding and the Wanderers will also have to play an extra competition if they succeed in the Europa League qualifiers. That ideally means Wolves will need to have a bigger and stronger squad to compete in all the competitions they participate next term.

One of primary areas that need strengthening is the defence, with the likes of Conor Coady, Wily Boly and Ryan Bennett the only central defenders currently at Nuno’s disposal. Romain Saiss and Leander Dendoncker can deputise at the back, but if Nuno wants to realistically compete for trophies next season, he needs to beef up his squad this summer.

A central defender is the need of the hour and the Wolves manager would be wise to sign Edson Alvarez.

A youth product of Club America, Alvarez impressed at last summer’s World Cup and has already won 22 caps for Mexico at such a tender age. Predominantly a centre-back, the Mexican is equally adept at playing at right-back or as a defensive midfielder. He is a strong, robust and no-nonsense defender who never shies away from flying into challenges and tackles.

The 21-year-old is technically solid and is excellent when it comes to playing out from the back. That should make him a perfect fit for Nuno’s system, where the defenders look to build attacks from the back. Alvarez will give Nuno a lot of tactical flexibility as he is capable of playing in different positions across defence and midfield.

Not only will the Mexico international add quality to Wolves’ backline but also bring competition for the current crop of defenders.

Verdict

Alvarez has massive potential to grow into a top defender. He’ll be a good fit for the Premier League and his presence will give Wolves the defensive depth they require to take the Europa League by storm next season.
