Wolves Opinion: Why the signing of Andre Silva would be a coup for Wolves

According to a report from Italian news outlet Gazzetta dello Sport, Wolves are in ‘pole position’ to sign AC Milan centre-forward Andre Silva.

The Portugal international, 23, spent last season on loan in Spain with Sevilla, but after a promising start, fell out of favour and out of the team. He has now returned to AC Milan, but it is believed his future lies away from the San Siro.

The report adds Andre Silva will cost Wolves a fee in the region of €30 million. Keeping that in mind, the Wanderers must go all out to sign him this summer.

Wolves enjoyed a fantastic return to the Premier League, finishing seventh in the table and set to play the Europa League qualifiers. They also had a good run in the FA Cup, only to get beaten in dramatic fashion by Watford.

Now, Nuno Espirito Santo’s team are in serious need of squad depth due to their participation in the Europa League. Wolves will be raring to break into the top six in the Premier League as well as attempt to make it to the group stages of the Europa League. For that, Andre Silva could be a smart addition this summer.

Raul Jimenez and Diogo Jota formed a lethal partnership up front for Nuno’s team, causing tons of problems for the opposition. However, the Wanderers do not have an adequate back up to compete as well as cover either of the front two. The likes of Ivan Cavaleiro, Helder Costa and Adama Traore didn’t do enough in the 2018/19 campaign.

Andre Silva could be that player that pushes Jimenez and Jota, whilst adding depth to the squad. The Portuguese forward didn’t have the best of seasons with Sevilla, but he is talented and can make an instant impact at the Molineux. The 23-year-old has decent pace and power, while his movement in the final third and dribbling skills tends to keep the opposition defenders on their toes.

The ex-Porto ace is a composed finisher in front of goal and works extremely hard off the ball. In fact, he enjoyed the most productive spell on his career under Nuno at Porto a few years ago. So the current Wolves manager knows Silva in and out and that coupled with the centre-forward’s previous experience in European competitions could prove to be handy for Wolves.

Verdict

At 23, Silva still has a long way to go before he hits his prime years in the game. Hence, it makes sense for Wolves looking to acquire the services of the Portuguese striker, whose quality could take Nuno’s side to a different level next season.
