Why Wolves dodged a bullet by not signing Thomas Lemar in January

In January, the Goal (h/t The Express) had claimed that Wolves were in pole position to sign Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Lemar. However, no deal materialised in January and he has stayed put at Atletico Madrid.

Thomas Lemar, 24, has struggled at Atletico Madrid since joining the team from AS Monaco in the summer of 2018. The Frenchman is yet to score or assist a single goal for Diego Simeone’s side this campaign despite playing 22 games across all competitions.

The report (h/t The Express) added the Spanish club were ready to offload the midfielder in the January transfer window, with Arsenal and Tottenham also linked. Wolves, meanwhile, signed Daniel Podence, Luke Matheson, Leonardo Campana and Enzo Loiodice to strengthen their squad during the January transfer window.

Nuno wanted to strengthen his attacking options in January and managed to do so with the additions of Podence and Campana. Podence and Campana have not only added quality to Wolves’ attacking options but also depth to the squad, which had become a tad thin after the exit of Patrick Cutrone. Therefore, the signing of Thomas Lemar would have made no sense for the Wanderers.

Lemar has struggled since joining Atletico Madrid, managing to score only three goals and register six assists in 65 appearances for the La Liga club. The Frenchman was one of the stars during AS Monaco’s famous title triumph in the 2016/17 season, contributing with 9 goals and 12 assists. But the attacker hasn’t been able to justify his price-tag of £52.7million, which Atletico paid Monaco to sign him in 2018.

Verdict

Thus, Wolves have dodged a bullet by not signing Lemar last month. They would have wasted their resources for a player who is out of form and hasn’t contributed with a goal or assist this La Liga season.
