Why Wolves have done the right thing by extending John Ruddy’s contract
As reported by Birmingham Live, Wolves have decided to extend the contract of goalkeeper John Ruddy by another year.
The 33-year-old Ruddy has been with Wolves for three years now, having arrived from Norwich City in 2017 on a free transfer. Ruddy’s current deal was about to expire at the end of June, casting doubts over his future at the club. (h/t Birmingham Live)

Wolves have had another solid season. After qualifying for Europa League last season, they are once again in contention for a top-six finish in the Premier League. When the English top-flight was suspended, Nuno Esprito Santo’s side were sixth in the table, just five points below fourth-placed Chelsea.
For the Midlands outfit to continue building on their impressive run of form, it is important that they strengthen the squad adequately. They should ensure that every department in the roster has enough depth and quality. This is why handing Ruddy an extension is a right move by Wolves.
Ruddy a valuable backup
There are just two goalkeepers in the first-team squad at Nuno’s disposal currently. Rui Patricio has been the undisputed first-choice in goal since arriving in 2018. Ruddy has been operating as his backup since and has done well every time he has gotten an opportunity.
Ruddy featured in nine matches last season, keeping four clean sheets in the process. In the ongoing campaign, he has played six times in all competitions, conceding just four goals and keeping three clean sheets.
Furthermore, one shouldn’t discount his contributions to Wolves’ promotion to the Premier League. Ruddy played in all but one game in the 2017/18 Championship season, keeping 24 clean sheets – most by any goalkeeper, as Wolves won the title and earned promotion to the top-flight.

A vastly experienced campaigner, Ruddy has 445 career appearances so far. The 33-year-old has proven his value to the side whenever he has been given a chance, despite having had to play second-fiddle to Rui Patricio.

John Ruddy, at 33, is entering the final phase of his career. However, the former England international has done well each time he has been called upon by Nuno.
Considering his vast experience and his past contributions to the side, Wolves have done the right thing by offering him a new one-year contract. Especially considering that there are no other goalkeepers in the squad apart from him and Rui Patricio.
