Why Zeki Celik to Everton would bolster their defence

According to The Times, Everton have entered the race to sign Lille star Zeki Celik ahead of the next season.

Celik, 23, came through the ranks of Buraspor’s youth system and joined Istanbulspor in August 2016. After making 69 appearances for Istanbulspor is two years, he was signed by Lille. Since then, he has featured regularly and has established himself as a key figure under Christophe Galtier.

The youngster has also been capped 14 times by Turkey since his debut in June 2018. He has been consistent in the last couple of years and has also attracted the attention of several clubs. Premier League rivals Tottenham are also keen on securing the services of the youngster, as per the report.

Celik could be a future right-back for Everton

One of the chief reasons for Everton’s inconsistency this season was their shaky backline. The Toffees conceded 56 goals this season and it is necessary for Carlo Ancelotti to reinforce the team’s defence. And the right-back is one key position that needs to be strengthened.

Seamus Coleman is their first-choice but he was pushed to the bench once Djibril Sidibe was brought in on loan. However, the Frenchman could return to France after his loan spell ends. And Jonjoe Kenny, who returned from his loan spell with Schalke, is the only option other than Coleman, who is already 31 and reaching the rear end of his career.

In that regard, Celik would be a sensible option for the club. The Turkish international has been consistent since his arrival at Lille and has impressed so far. He managed to contribute with 1 goal and 5 assists last term and continued with the fine form this season too. He provided 3 assists in 24 league games this term before the league was called off.

A perfect modern-day right-back, Celik could bring in competition for Kenny after Coleman decides to step down. And with two young right-backs in the team, the manager could do well.

Verdict

At 23, Celik has already shown immense potential in Ligue 1. He has the ability to succeed at a high level and could be a replacement for Coleman at Everton if he is able to develop under the guidance of Ancelotti. He could go on to represent them in the long run.
