Why West Ham should make a move for Vladimir Coufal

According to The Independent, West Ham are interested in signing Slavia Prague star Vladimir Coufal ahead of the next season.

Coufal, 27, rose through the youth ranks of Banik Ostrava and played for FC Hlucin and Slovan Liberec before joining Slavia Prague in the summer of 2018. Since his arrival in Prague, the right-back has been a regular starter and has also helped his side lift two Czech Republic league titles and the League Cup.

He has also made his return to the national team and featured in the Euro qualifiers. Coufal’s impressive performances have also garnered the attention of several other clubs. The report suggests that English clubs Southampton and Brighton and Hove Albion are also interested in the Czech Republic star.

Coufal could provide depth at right-back for West Ham

Defence has been one of the major concerns for Moyes. They conceded 62 goals this season in the league and that is poor considering the Premier League standards. Thus, a change needs to happen if they are to do better in defensive situations. And one key area the manager should focus on strengthening is the right-back.

At the moment, Ryan Fredericks is the only option available at the manager’s disposal after Jeremy Ngaika and Pablo Zabaleta were allowed to leave last month when their contracts came to an end. Thus, a right-back is a must in the summer.

In that regard, Coufal would be a smart addition to West Ham. The Czech Republic international has gone from strength to strength in the last couple of years. Apart from his defending, he has also done a decent job while joining the team’s attack, scoring 3 goals in the Fortuna League this season.

His inclusion to Moyes’ squad would provide them with some much-needed depth and quality. And he would certainly bring healthy competition to Fredericks. He has done a decent job so far for Prague and could be a crucial player for the Hammers next season if he is able to continue with the good form.

Verdict

With Zabaleta and Ngaika having left, the Hammers are in dire need of right-backs to bolster their squad. And Coufal, who has been impressive so far, has the ability to succeed at a higher level and can be a useful addition to West Ham. Thus, they should manage to lure the 27-year-old to London at the earliest.
