Highschool of Dead and its plot

Highschool of the Dead is a manga created by Daisuke Satō and illustrated by Shōji Satō that narrates the experiences of high school students and their nurses during a zombie apocalypse caused by a lethal pandemic. Fujimi Shobo published the series from 2006 to 2013 in seven tankōbon volumes, and Yen Press released it in North America.

The production for the first four volumes is done by a Madhouse-produced anime adaptation, which has 12 episodes and ran from July to September 2010 in Japan. In 2011, Madhouse also created a unique video animation episode. The anime series and OVA were released on DVD and Blu-ray in North America by Sentai Filmworks in an English dub.

The plot is set in modern-day Japan, Highschool of the Dead follows the struggles of the high school students and their nurse as they navigate the catastrophic global event known as the “Outbreak”. As they attempt to survive in a world overrun by zombies, the students must also contend with the collapse of society, dangerous fellow survivors, and their own potential loss of morality.

The story starts at the high school, where the students encounter a corrupt teacher and his followers before venturing out into the town to search for survivors. Along the way, they rescue a little girl and a dog before taking refuge in a mall, a police station, and eventually an elementary school believed to be a safe zone.

Why Highschool of Dead cancelled?

Regrettably, the manga’s author, Daisuke Sato, fell ill in 2008, which made it more challenging to oversee the series’ development. Because of this, the manga was put on hold until 2010, the same year the Japanese anime version of Highschool of the Dead debuted, however even after the author’s return, not much new material was produced. Highschool of the Dead had a brief comeback in April 2013 with the publication of a single chapter, however, none of the main characters was there. Instead, the chapter showed police removing a group of other survivors from the school and vacating the building.

Regrettably, Sato was identified as having ischemic heart disease in 2011, and over the following few years, his condition deteriorated. After the now-final chapter of Highschool of the Dead was published, the manga was abruptly put on hold once more. At 52 years old, Sato passed away in 2017.

The co-creator of Highschool of the Dead, Shouji Sato, spoke about the passing of his friend and the decision to discontinue the series in an interview with Comic Natalie in 2019. “Overseas fans who are unfamiliar with the specifics of the circumstance say, ‘Draw a continuation right away,’ but it’s not that simple,” he remarked.

Fans are obviously disappointed that Highschool of the Dead won’t be returning any time soon, but Shouji Sato is honourable in seeing Daisuke as a crucial contributor to the manga’s creation, and keeping the series as a part of his legacy shows respect. Despite the awful nature of the series’ ending, fans can still read the manga or watch the 2010 anime. Everyone who hasn’t seen it yet should give it a watch because it is still as strange and contentious as it was in 2010.

Seasons of Highschool of Dead

Currently, there is only one season of the Highschool Of The Dead anime and no announcement has been made about a second season. Additionally, there is an OVA episode that mainly focuses on fan service, where the characters are stranded on a tropical island that appears to be zombie-free. The anime’s first season, comprising 12 episodes, aired in Japan in July 2010 and has since acquired a large fan following. Despite this, there has been no confirmation about a possible second season of Highschool Of The Dead.

Will it come again?

As of 2023, there is no sign of receiving an official release announcement second season of “Highschool of the Dead”. Also, there is no assurance that there will be a second season, despite the fact that the first season did not cover everything. The English translation of the manga was published in two omnibus editions, each of which contained four and three volumes. The manga has seven volumes. The first four volumes were covered by the anime’s first season, leaving enough for three additional volumes. Despite Daisuke Sato, the author of “Highschool of the Dead,” passed away in 2017 as a result of complications from ischemic heart disease, hence it is highly doubtful that any additional volumes will be published.
