Why United are right in reviving their interest in Moussa Dembele

According to Manchester Evening News (h/t The Sun), Manchester United are set to revive their interest in Moussa Dembele, who is in scintillating form for French side Lyon.

The report also suggests that United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had sent scouts to watch Dembele twice last month and wants to add big names to his squad in the summer. And Chelsea are also interested in signing the Frenchman.

Dembele, 23, who came through Paris Saint-Germain and Fulham’s youth ranks, moved to Scotland with Celtic in 2016. In 94 appearances for the hoops, he scored 51 goals and provided 18 assists.

In the absence of Memphis Depay, he has been the main force for Lyon this season. Meanwhile, the Red Devils are struggling to break into the top four spots. They have been inconsistent throughout the campaign so far.

United boss Solskjaer failed to bring in a striker in the summer after selling Romelu Lukaku to Inter Milan and that has affected the team.

Marcus Rashford has done well up top and even scored 14 goals in the league but he’s currently out injured. Anthony Martial has also found the back of the net on several occasions but he often cuts an isolated figure in the big games. United have lacked a confident player to lead their attack and interestingly enough, they signed Odion Ighalo last month on deadline day.

The Nigerian is, however, a temporary addition and hence, the manager should try to orchestrate a permanent deal for an established striker. And Moussa Dembele would be the perfect fit.

The 23-year-old has racked up 19 goals in 35 games across all competitions for Lyon this term and is in red-hot form. He would add firepower to United’s dull attack and his experience with Fulham would come in handy.

Dembele is an out-and-out striker and his presence would allow the manager to move Rashford to his favoured position – the left-wing.

The French youth international has been clinical in front of the goal for both Celtic and Lyon. He has also scored 13 goals in 25 games for France’s U21 side.

Dembele has proven to be a goalscorer of the highest quality. This should convince United to make a prompt attempt to sign him in the summer.
