Why Tyrone Mings to Everton would bolster their defence

According to Sunday Mirror (h/t Birmingham Mail), Everton have joined the race to sign Aston Villa star Tyrone Mings in the summer.

Mings, 27, came through the ranks of Southampton’s youth system and had spells with Yate Town, Chippenham Town and Ipswich Town before making the jump to Bournemouth in the summer of 2015. However, he endured a disappointing time with the Cherries and was sent on loan to Aston Villa initially.

He became a crucial member of the squad and helped them overcome Derby County in the Championship playoff as they got promoted to the Premier League. And his move to Villa Park was made permanent last summer. His impressive performances also earned him a call up to England’s national team as he made his debut in October 2019.

Everton lack depth in defence

The Toffees, meanwhile, have managed to move higher up the table since the arrival of Carlo Ancelotti. Though they have got some good results, they have been inconsistent throughout the campaign.

However, with the season coming to an end, the manager should shift his focus on strengthening the squad for the next campaign. He needs to bring in reinforcements in multiple positions if they are to do well and progress in further campaigns.

One key area where Ancelotti should focus on strengthening is the backline. The defence has been shaky and inconsistent throughout the campaign, conceding 53 goals in 36 games so far. At the moment, there are only three centre-backs available at the manager’s disposal.

Young Mason Holgate has been impressive, switching between the backline and the defensive midfield role. But the other defenders, Yerry Mina and Michael Keane haven’t lived up the expectations, thus putting the team in a difficult situation. Hence, adding depth to their defensive unit in the summer would be a wise move by the club.

To that end, signing Mings would do them a world of good. The Englishman has been a steady performer for Villa since last season. He has done fairly well despite the club’s poor performance in the Premier League. He has featured in 30 games for the Villans so far, contributing with 2 goals and 1 assist.

He would definitely add depth to Ancelotti’s squad, whilst also bringing in healthy competition. The former Bournemouth man’s impressive performances have also attracted the attention of Manchester United, as per the report and that shows his ability.

Verdict

Given the lack of quality and depth at the back, it is clear that Everton are in dire need of centre-backs. And Mings would provide them with some much-needed depth. Thus, they should lure the English international to Goodison Pak if Villa gets relegated to the Championship.
