Why Burnley must sign Watford veteran star Troy Deeney
According to Burnley Express, Troy Deeney has again been linked with a move to Burnley. The Watford hitman has previously been a target for the Clarets on many occasions but they have not been able to complete a move for him. He was linked with a move last summer as well. Burnley boss Sean Dyche is said to be an admirer of the striker.
Troy Deeney is a stalwart in English football
Troy Deeney started his professional career with Walsall in League One before joining Watford in the summer of 2010 and the Birmingham-born hitman has spent the past decade at Vicarage Road, establishing himself as a cult hero among the club faithful.
The 32-year-old bagged 77 goals in 205 appearances for the Hornets in the Championship earlier in his career, including a 21-goal campaign in 2014-15 as Watford secured promotion to the Premier League. Deeney eventually went on to carve out a big reputation for himself as a powerful centre-forward in the English top-flight, registering 47 goals and 21 assists in 163 outings.
Deeney was one of the few Watford players to come away with some genuine credit from the club’s ignominious relegation campaign in the PL last term, having scored 10 goals in 27 appearances despite struggling with injuries.
Deeney would be a good addition to Burnley
Burnley have Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood as their preferred pair of strikers to start games. Both of them are physical and well-built old school centre-forwards who can play with their backs to goal, bringing in the other forward into play. Both of them have done well to secure their places in the side pushing the likes of Jay Rodriguez and Matej Vydra out as backups.
However, Vydra has been linked with an exit in recent weeks. That would leave some empty room in the attack. Burnley making a move to sign Troy Deeney would make sense for a number of reasons. A bonafide goalscorer at the Premier League and Championship level, it is a no-brainer that the 32-year-old has the experience and the pedigree to add more depth and firepower to the Clarets’ striking ranks.
Furthermore, the potential arrival of Deeney would also hand a boost to Sean Dyche’s squad. Widely regarded as one of the best target-man strikers in English football, Deeney could provide a likely upgrade on the likes of Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood.

Troy Deeney still has a couple of good years left in him at the Premier League level and Burnley should fancy their chances of nabbing him, with the 32-year-old having about 6 months remaining on his contract. He fits the bill as an excellent short-term fix at Turf Moor for a wide variety of reasons and Burnley will definitely look more daunting with Deeney operating up top.
