Why Tottenham signing Wout Weghorst would be a great move
While the return of Gareth Bale has dominated the headlines for Tottenham (source – Sky Sports), their search for a backup striker has gone cold for a bit. The Athletic claim that Wout Weghorst is the latest name to be considered by Spurs to provide more cover in attack.

Wout Weghorst is a 28-year-old Dutch striker who plays for VfL Wolfsburg. He started his youth career at NEO Borne and also played for the likes of DETO Twenterand and Willem II.
It was at FC Emmen that he got a taste of first-team action as he spent two seasons there, playing 66 games and scoring 21 goals. He moved to Heracles Almelo in 2014. Another two seasons were spent there, with 24 goals and 8 assists in 73 games (source – Transfermarkt).
In 2016, he made the move to AZ Alkmaar and started his goal-scoring spree. He played a total of 86 games for them and scored 45 goals and assisted 13 times. The same rich vein of form continued as he moved to Germany and signed for Wolfsburg. In the 80 appearances for the German outfit, he has contributed to 50 goals (38 goals +12 assists).
A rather baffling fact is that he just has 4 appearances for the Netherlands despite producing stellar numbers consistently at club level.
Why Weghorst would be a useful signing
Weghorst comes with a stellar track record in Netherlands and Germany. He has been among the goals regularly for the last couple of seasons. With just Harry Kane as the only recognised striker in the team, it would be a no-brainer for Spurs to go for someone like Weghorst.
Given his height and physicality, he can offer Mourinho a different approach to a game. He can bring the wingers and midfielders into play with his hold-up play. Mourinho can opt for a route one approach with Weghorst at the tip of his attack.
Verdict
With so many strikers being targeted by the North London outfit (source – Football.london), there seems to be no end product to it. It is definitely understandable that a club like Spurs should have more than just one striker in their squad. However, there are valid reasons as to why no striker would want to make the move.
If Mourinho can figure out a way to use both Kane and Weghorst in the starting XI, it would be a devastating combination. Kane’s intelligent running and positioning could work perfectly in tandem with Weghorst’s ability to hold the ball and create space.
