Why Sergej Milinkovic-Savic to Tottenham would bolster their midfield

According to Daily Mail, Tottenham are interested in signing Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic in the summer transfer window. The player could cost upwards of £80m.

A product of Grazer’s youth academy, Milinkovic-Savic, 25, moved to Belgium with Genk in the summer of 2014. He was signed by Lazio a year after impressing in the Jupiler League. He immediately became an integral member of the Italian side and has helped them win a few trophies in the past 5 years.

The Serbian has established himself as one of the best midfielders in Serie A. His eye-catching displays have also attracted attention from several other Premier League teams including Manchester United and Chelsea, as per the report.

Tottenham, meanwhile, have endured a disappointing campaign so far. They have been dumped out of the other cup competitions, whilst also finding themselves in 8th place in the league table. The arrival of Jose Mourinho saw them get off to a good start but the results didn’t last long.

The absence of Harry Kane, Heung Min-Son and winter signing Steven Bergwijn has played a key role in their lacklustre performance. Apart from that, the defence has also been shaky throughout the campaign, conceding 23 goals in the 17 games Mourinho has been in charge.

With limited options in their attacking unit, it is clear that the manager should bring in reinforcements to their frontline. Tottenham’s defence also needs to be changed with the likes of Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld reaching the back end of their career.

Milinkovic-Savic could be a leader in midfield for Tottenham

Midfield is also one key area which the manager should consider strengthening before the next season starts. Tanguy Ndombele, Moussa Sissoko, Harry Winks and Giovani Lo Celso are the four attack-minded midfielders available at the manager’s disposal. And Gedson Fernandes was brought on loan in January.

However, none of them has performed too well. Summer signing Ndombele has found it hard in the Premier League, racking up just 2 goals and 2 assists so far. Sissoko has struggled with injuries and Lo Celso has also contributed less to the team.

In that regard, signing Milinkovic-Savic would be a wise option by the club. The Serbian has been in sensational form in the past five years. He is also known to be a goalscoring midfielder, something Tottenham have lacked this term.

The Serbian international has already racked up 4 goals and 5 assists this term and is the engine of Lazio’s squad. He would definitely bring a wealth of experience to Mourinho’s squad and could also provide them with the much-needed depth in midfield.

Verdict

The former Genk man is just 25 and could be a crucial player for Tottenham in the next few years. Mourinho’s side are in dire need of in-form midfielders and signing Milinkovic-Savic would boost their confidence in the middle of the park. Thus, they should lure the Serbian to North London this summer.
