Why Tottenham should plot a move for rising star Dean Henderson

As per Football.london (h/t The Shields Gazette), Tottenham are considering signing Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson, who currently plies his trade with Sheffield United on loan.

Henderson, 23, came through the ranks of Manchester United’s youth system but could not break into the club’s senior team due to the presence of David De Gea and Sergio Romero. He has spent the majority of his career on loan with several clubs including Grimsby Town and Shrewsbury Town.

However, he moved to Bramall Lane on loan in the summer of 2018. Currently into his second season with the Blades, the Englishman has been impressive throughout the last two campaigns.

He was instrumental in Sheffield’s promotion to the Premier League at the end of last season. He has gone from strength to strength and has become one of the best shot-stoppers in the top-flight in the past few months.

Meanwhile, Jose Mourinho has struggled to take Tottenham to the desired heights after making a promising start. The manager had to do with a lot of injuries to key players and due to limited options in the squad, Spurs have failed to cope with the pace of the league.

They are currently 8th in the league table after failing to win any of their last three league games. The defensive unit has not been up to the mark, conceding 40 goals so far, which is the highest among the top 8 in the table. And, they have also faced issues in the goalkeeping department.

Frenchman Hugo Lloris underwent an elbow surgery that kept him out of action for several months and Paulo Gazzaniga was deputized. Despite doing a decent job, the Argentine hasn’t been consistent and has kept just 2 clean sheets from 18 games, while conceding 26 goals.

Third-choice shot-stopper Michel Vorm has made just 1 appearance across all competitions and is out of contract by the end of the season. Therefore, it would be wise of the club to look out for a goalkeeper who can be seen as a long-term prospect and Manchester United loanee Dean Henderson would be a perfect choice.

The 23-year-old has been a revelation in the top-flight with his stunning performances throughout the campaign. Last season, he kept 21 clean sheets in 46 league games and helped the Blades get promoted. And has continued the fine form into this season, conceding just 22 goals in 27 games and kept 10 clean sheets.

Henderson has gone from strength to strength and has been one of the best goalkeepers in the league, keeping Sheffield in the fight for a European spot. He could be a crucial member for Spurs, who are deprived of quality in their goalkeeping department.

The former English U21 international has shown his abilities to succeed at a higher level and would definitely be a starter. He could bring healthy competition to Lloris and Gazzaniga at Spurs.

Verdict

Lloris has not been the same since his return from injury and Tottenham don’t have a world-class backup as many others do. In that regard, Henderson would be a good choice for them as he has been excellent so far and has a long way to go.

Therefore, Spurs must attempt to lure the 23-year-old to North London and keep him permanently as he can represent them in the long run.
