Why Tottenham should part ways with Jan Vertonghen

According to The Independent, Dutch side Ajax are looking to make an approach for Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen, whose contract at North London is set to expire at the end of this season.

The report suggests that Tottenham are yet to offer a new deal to the Belgian and he could return to his former club from where the Lilywhites bought him for €12m in 2012.

Vertonghen, 32, had been a consistent member for Tottenham since his arrival in 2012 and has made over 300 appearances for the club. He has scored 13 goals and provided 7 assists in the process.

Despite featuring regularly, he has lacked game time in the last two campaigns. He was out of action for a long time due to injuries and has fallen down the pecking order under Jose Mourinho, who has preferred Ryan Sessegnon and Japhet ahead of the former Ajax man in recent weeks.

Meanwhile, Spurs have overcome a bad start to the season and are currently 6th in the league table.

One of the chief reasons behind their poor performances is the failure to stop conceding. The defensive unit has already conceded 32 goals in the league.

To that end, the 32-year-old has been inconsistent and is in the twilight of his career. He has been one of Tottenham’s best defenders alongside Toby Alderweireld in the past but seems to have slowed down and injuries have been a major concern.

They already have the likes of Sessegnon and Tanganga – both of whom can cover the central and left-wing area – and in terms of experience, Alderweireld has renewed his contract.

Verdict

Keeping hold of the Belgian would make no sense as Tottenham need to get rid of the deadwood. in fact, Mourinho could do with a new defender to add depth to the squad.

Therefore, the Lilywhites must look to sell the 32-year-old in the summer and make way for fresh faces.
