Why Tottenham should move for Marcelo Brozovic in January

According to claims from Calciomercato (h/t Football London), Tottenham could make a move for Inter Milan midfielder Marcelo Brozovic when the transfer window reopens in January.

Spurs had been credited with an interest in the 27-year-old in the summer amidst talks of a swap deal with the Serie A giants involving Tanguy Ndombele. Nothing materialised back then but Jose Mourinho’s side are set to go back in the market for the Croatian, with Inter Milan now willing to listen to offers.

Tottenham, though, are expected to face stiff competition from French club Monaco in their pursuit of Brozovic, who has less than two years remaining on his current contract at the San Siro. (Calciomercato h/t Football.London)

Profile

Marcelo Brozovic started his career with Hrvatski Dragovoljac in his homeland and subsequently featured for Lokomotiva Zagreb and Dinamo Zagreb before completing a move to Inter Milan in January 2015, initially on loan with an obligation to buy.

The 27-year-old has established himself as one of the best central midfielders in Italy over the past five years, registering 23 goals and 25 assists in 204 appearances across all competitions. He was also a part of the squad that finished runners-up to Sevilla in the 2019-20 Europa League.

A full international for Croatia since 2014, Brozovic has earned 55 caps for his nation. He has represented his country at the 2014 and 2018 FIFA World Cups as well as UEFA Euro 2016.

Brozovic would add more quality to Tottenham’s midfield

Tottenham roped in Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg from Southampton to bolster their midfield in the summer. The Dane has made a positive start to life in North London but the Lilywhites ideally need another new face to restructure their options in the middle of the park.

Moussa Sissoko isn’t getting any younger at 32 while Tanguy Ndomble has struggled to live up to the reputation. Dele Alli has fallen out of favour under Jose Mourinho, while it has been clear from the manager’s team selection that he rates Eric Dier as a centre-back rather than as a defensive midfielder.

To that end, Tottenham making a renewed attempt to sign Marcelo Brozovic would certainly make a lot of sense in footballing terms. The Croatian has the versatility to play as a defensive midfielder and also as a box-to-box operator.

The 27-year-old has plenty of top-level experience under his belt, having made more than 200 appearances for Inter Milan. That, coupled with his impressive track record of goals and assists, clearly indicates that Brozovic is more than capable of offering a genuine goal threat from the midfield.

Verdict

The likes of Ndombele, Dier, and Harry Winks haven’t managed to chip in with enough goal contributions and Marcelo Brozovic would definitely be an upgrade in that regard.

All in all, the 27-year-old still has several years remaining in his prime, thus making him worthy of a significant outlay from Tottenham.
