Why Tottenham should make a move for Demarai Gray

According to The Times, Tottenham are interested in signing Leicester City star Demarai Gray in the summer to bolster their attacking options.

Having come through Birmingham City’s youth ranks, Gray, 24, made 78 appearances for the Blues before moving to Leicester City in January 2016. His impressive performances with Birmingham in the Championship earned him a move to King Power Stadium and he immediately became a regular member of the Foxes squad.

He was also a part of the Leicester squad that won the Premier League title in the 2015/16 season. Until last season, he was a regular starter but has fallen down the pecking order under Brendan Rodgers this term. The winger has also entered the final 12 months of his contract with the club and thus, Tottenham should manage to secure his services this summer.

Gray could provide Tottenham with depth on the flanks

Tottenham’s defence has been poor throughout the campaign and it is clear that they are in dire need of centre-backs. Apart from defence, new faces are required up front. Mourinho’s men struggled when Harry Kane and Heung Min-Son were out of action for a long time due to injury.

January signing Steven Bergwijn did a decent job since his arrival but Brazilian winger Lucas Moura failed to live up to the expectations. Erik Lamela has also struggled with injuries in the past few years. Thus, the manager should bring in an attacker in the summer to keep the squad depth intact throughout the season.

In that regard, Gray would be a good addition to Mourinho’s squad. The English U21 international featured regularly until last season, where he scored 4 goals in 34 league games. He is just 24 and has a huge future ahead of him. His presence could add some much-needed depth and quality to Tottenham.

He has made over 240 appearances, scoring 22 goals and providing 23 assists in English football. Gray can develop himself under the Portuguese tactician and could become a key player for the team if he gets the right opportunity. The Lilywhites could also do well with another winger in the squad.

Verdict

Despite Tottenham having adequate options on the flank, the wingers have not been up to the mark. And Gray’s inclusion would definitely add competition to the wingers in the squad. Thus, they should manage to lure the Englishman to North London by taking advantage of his situation at Leicester.
