Why Tottenham should make a move for Aaron Ramsdale

According to Daily Mail, Tottenham are interested in signing Bournemouth goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale in the summer.

Having risen through the youth ranks at Sheffield United, Ramsdale, 22, joined Bournemouth in January 2017. However, he received limited opportunities and was sent on loan to Chesterfield and AFC Wimbledon respectively. Since his return to the Vitality Stadium last summer, he has been the first-choice in goal for the Cherries.

The youngster is also the first choice for England’s U21 squad and has also won the European Championship with his nation’s U19 side in 2017. However, this season, he couldn’t perform at his best due to the team’s poor campaign. Ramsdale is still one of the best young talents in the country and has already shown his potential. Thus, Tottenham should secure his services this summer.

Ramsdale – A future goalkeeper for Tottenham

At the moment, the Lilywhites have two main goalkeepers in their squad. World Cup winner Hugo Lloris is the first-choice in goal and he has done well for so many years since his arrival in 2012. He still remains the first-choice without any proper competition for the spot.

28-year-old Paulo Gazzaniga was signed from Southampton in 2017 but the Argentine hasn’t been able to replace the Frenchman. He has not been at his best and also couldn’t make the best use of his opportunities when Lloris was injured for a long time. Third-choice Michel Vorm has also left the club and thus, a goalkeeper is a must for the future as Lloris and Gazzaniga have just two more years left in their contract.

In that regard, signing Ramsdale would help them secure the future of their goalkeeping department. The English U21 international has featured in all but one game for the Cherries so far and has done a decent job despite the team’s abysmal performance. And given his quality and form, it is clear that with a better defence line, he could go on to be one of the bests in the game.

His inclusion would bring serious competition for Lloris, whilst also adding depth to the goalkeeping department. And Ramsdale could be the one to take over when the Frenchman steps down, given the youngster continues to develop.

Verdict

At 22, Ramsdale already has the experience and is capable of succeeding at the highest level. And with limited quality, it is clear that Tottenham need to address their goalkeeping department for the future. Thus, they should lure the 22-year-old to North London, especially now that the Cherries have been relegated to the Championship.
