Why Tottenham should invest in Charlie Kelman for the future
According to Daily Mail, Tottenham are ready to launch another bid for Southend united striker Charlie Kelman after they failed in attempts last January.
Kelman, 18, rose through the ranks of FC Dallas’ youth system in the USA and joined Southend’s U18. He was highly successful with the League One side’s youth system and was promoted to the senior set-up last January.
Since then, he has been impressive for the side and has also attracted interest from Sunderland, as per the report. Kelman has just one more year left on his contract with Southend and thus, Tottenham should manage to strike a deal for the teenager before the summer.
The absence of Harry Kane and Heung Min-Son created a huge dent in their hopes of moving upwards in the league table this season. Spurs failed to score enough and the defence has also been vulnerable, conceding 17 goals in the last 23 games across all competitions. Thus, a defensive reinforcement is a must in the summer.
Kelman – A perfect backup for Harry Kane?
Apart from a defensive signing, Mourinho should also bring in strikers to the squad. Kane has been the lone striker and his injury left them in a difficult state. The Englishman has been brilliant but without a backup for him, Tottenham would find it difficult to manage.
In that regard, signing Kelman would be a good decision by the club. He is young and is one of the best teenagers in the country. After scoring 61 goals for Southend’s youth teams, he has racked up 5 goals in 12 League One games. And with the financial crisis caused by the pandemic, Tottenham would be wise to make a move for a youngster and Kelman fits the bill perfectly.
The USA U20 international could be seen as a replacement for Kane in the future. And he could develop himself under the guidance of Mourinho.
Verdict
After selling Vincent Jansen and Fernando Llorente in the summer, the Lilywhites failed to bring in a backup for Kane. And it is clear that they lack depth up front. And Kelman could provide them with the required depth and quality. Thus, Tottenham should make a prompt attempt to lure the teenager to North London this summer.
