Why Tottenham deciding to sell Eric Dier is a good move

According to Daily Mail, Tottenham are considering selling midfielder Eric Dier as they fear his commitment to the club.

The report suggests that Dier wants an assurance over his first-team status and with the final year left on his contract, Tottenham will consider offloading him if he doesn’t sign a new one. The club have already faced a similar situation with Christian Eriksen, who moved to Inter Milan.

Dier, 26, came through the ranks of Sporting Lisbon’s youth system in Portugal before joining Tottenham in the summer of 2014. He became a regular member of the squad under Mauricio Pochettino and has been responsible for the club’s rise to a higher place in the past few years.

He lost his place earlier in the campaign after the club signed Tanguy Ndombele. The rise of Harry Winks has also led to Dier being shunned out of the starting XI. Things seemed to change with the arrival of Jose Mourinho, who initially preferred him but that has not gone down well.

The midfielder has lost his place in the squad once again. He hasn’t started a league game since Christmas and hence, it is reasonable for the club to look for suitors for the former Sporting Lisbon man.

Mourinho has several established midfielders to play deep such as Winks, Ndombele and Moussa Sissoko. Apart from them, youth product Oliver Skipp has also been promoted to the senior team.

Winks has been exceptional for the English outfit and has featured regularly. He was instrumental in the win against Manchester City. Summer recruit Ndombele has got the ability to succeed if he overcomes his injury issues. Therefore, holding on to Dier would make no sense.

The 26-year-old hasn’t been at his best lately and has fallen down the pecking order under Mourinho. His performances have been poor and he has not featured for Gareth Southgate’s squad in the last six European qualifier fixtures.

Dier’s chances of getting back to the starting line-up look bleak and it would be good for him to move.
