Why Timo Werner to Chelsea would bolster their attack

According to Kicker (h/t The Shields Gazette), Chelsea have made contact with RB Leipzig over a potential move for Timo Werner in the summer.

Werner, 24, has established himself as one of the best strikers in Europe in the past few years. He has been impressive for both Germany and Leipzig and has also become the first-choice centre-forward for his national team. He has taken the Bundesliga by storm.

Meanwhile, Frank Lampard has done a stellar job in his first season in charge of Chelsea. Despite having youngsters at his disposal, the manager has taken the team to the 4th position in the league table as they eye a place in next season’s Champions League.

Though the Blues have reached a safe place in the standings, they have been inconsistent throughout the campaign. One of the chief reasons for their inconsistency is the lack of quality and depth in their attacking ranks. Tammy Abraham, who has scored 13 goals in the league, is their leading goal scorer but the English youngster has been injured a lot of times.

Apart from him, none of the forwards has been able to do a good job for the team. Olivier Giroud and Michy Batshuayi have failed to convince the manager and have been left on the bench for the best part of the 2019/20 season.

Hence, the need for attacking strength is pretty clear. A move for Timo Werner in the summer would be the best option for Chelsea.

In his debut season with Leipzig, Werner scored 21 goals and provided 7 assists and since then, he has reached double figures in each season. In 36 games this term, the German has already racked up a whopping 27 goals and 12 assists and was instrumental in Leipzig’s win over Tottenham in the Champions League.

The Germany international comes with a guarantee of goals and would be a great addition to Chelsea if he joins them. He is just 24 and could be a good fit alongside Abraham for the Blues in their attacking unit.

Verdict

The 24-year-old is in the form of his life and Chelsea are in need of more quality in their attacking unit. Werner’s inclusion would certainly benefit them in terms of goal count if he is able to replicate his current form.
