Why this £155,000-a-week Chelsea star could be a great signing for Borussia Dortmund

Alvaro Morata

Lucien Favre was appointed as the new Borussia Dortmund coach last month and there is widespread excitement to see what he has in store. Dortmund parted ways with Peter Stöger at the end of last season after they finished in the 4th place.

His departure ended an inconsistent campaign that began with the Dutchman Peter Bosz in charge before he was sacked midway through the season.

Dortmund must now revamp their squad and Favre should aim to make a number of new signings before the start of the next season.

The Swiss coach is reportedly keen on bringing £155,000-a-week Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata to the Bundesliga this summer. The striker has failed to make an impact since his move from Real Madrid last year. But he could be a great signing for Dortmund.

In 31 games for the Blues last season, Morata scored 11 goals and provided 6 assists, averaging a goal every 0.35 matches. Those aren’t the worst of numbers if you take a closer look. There are strikers who are worse off in the league, so let’s give credit where it’s due.

In his brief second spell with Real Madrid, the striker scored 15 goals in 26 appearances, most of which came off the bench. He is a fine finisher and a deadly poacher, making him a dangerous man in the final third.

Morata always rose to the occasion when needed for Madrid but what happened to him in the Premier League? Well, it’s a typical case of another attacking player who just couldn’t cope with the intensity and physicality of the English top-flight.

Throughout the years, a number of high-profile players joined English teams and failed to live up to the hype. Angel Di Maria, Memphis Depay, Renato Sanches etc. are all players who exceeded expectations in other leagues but failed to do so in England. Now, it’s the same case with Morata.

Before playing for Los Blancos, Morata enjoyed a successful stint with Juventus, making 63 appearances for the club, scoring 15 goals in the process. With Morata in the squad, Favre will have a number of top-class players his disposal up front. He certainly has the qualities required to succeed and hence, Dortmund must pursue a deal for him.
