Why Swansea City should go all out for Joe Pigott in January

Towards the end of September, a report from the Mirror (h/t Wales Online) had claimed that Swansea City were interested in signing AFC Wimbledon striker Joe Pigott before the domestic deadline. However, nothing came to fruition and the 27-year-old ended up staying put at Plough Lane.

A youth exponent of Charlton Athletic, Joe Pigott made his senior debut for the Addicks in the Championship during the 2013-14 season. However, he failed to cement his place as a regular fixture at the Valley and spent time on loan at Gillingham, Newport County, Southend United and Luton Town in the Football League.

Pigott joined Cambridge United on a permanent deal and had a brief stint at non-league outfit Maidstone United before moving to AFC Wimbledon in the third tier in January 2018.

The towering centre-forward has since established himself as a quality goalscorer in the Football League, registering 43 goals and 12 assists in 126 appearances for the Dons.

Pigott would help solve Swansea’s goalscoring issues

Swansea City look well on course for another shot at promotion after suffering play-off heartbreak last time around.

To that end, Steve Cooper would be better off bolstering his squad with some fresh faces in the January window to boost the club’s surge for promotion. With Swansea just managing 21 goals in 19 league fixtures in the Championship so far, the manager should surely have an eye on some potential attacking targets.

The Swans roped in Jamal Lowe from Wigan Athletic to add more depth and quality to their attack in the summer while Swedish striker Viktor Gyokeres also joined the ranks on loan from Brighton. However, neither player has managed to make a massive impact at the Liberty Stadium, leaving Andre Ayew to shoulder the bulk of the goalscoring workload.

Ayew has been the key driving force behind Swansea’s bright start to the campaign with 7 goals in 17 league appearances. But the Welsh outfit can definitely do with some additional firepower up top heading into the crucial second half of the campaign.

Swansea need some transfer spark in January to keep their promotion hopes alive and a potential deal for Joe Pigott could help ease the club’s goalscoring issues. The 27-year-old has been in red-hot form for Wimbledon in League One this season, registering 9 goals and 4 assists in 16 appearances so far.

Verdict

Joe Pigott doesn’t have a lot of experience in the Championship but his impressive returns in the third tier over the past few years should be enough to warrant another shot at this level.

The 27-year-old still potentially has his best years ahead of him and Swansea could well be on their way to promotion glory if Pigott manages to hit the ground running in the Championship.
